Here at UVa. they usually attack people and each other.

You must not live in Georgia. Those critters are lawn killers. Or as we call ‘em - Tree Kitties

I like squirrels, too. They don’t bother anyone and are fun to watch. If there are too many then why not shoot them for the meat instead of just blowing them to smitherines.

This sounds like Digger (ground) Squirrels but I think they should let the Navy Seals put on a shootin exhibition...

Grey squirrels had always been a problem around here. The city has or had a law requiring residents to exterminate those living on their property, mostly for orchard protection and rabies prevention.

Now we have this invasive species, English Red (Eastern Red?) squirrels I think they are called, and they have displaced most of the greys. They are cute and furry (less so than the greys IMO) but otherwise a pain in the kazoo. They tear stuff apart like yard furniture and so forth, and the chewed a big hole in the lid of my trash can.

My cat used to keep them away til he got ran over a few weeks ago & now they are everywhere. My schnauzer likes to go after varmints but the little squirrels don't turn him on like the larger greys do. I try to run them off and they barely acknowledge my presence.

New cat being raised but it'll be a few months before he's big enough to do his job. So I'll have to see how that blowing them up thing goes, I might need to do that. A friend of mine used to do that to moles, making booby traps using caps, batteries, and steel wool. I'd be out at his place & hear the "bang" come from the field and we'd laugh "there goes another one". And a self cleaning trap unlike the storebought ones - just pick up the battery pack and move on to the next one, add more hookup wire as needed.

"I like squirrels- they don’t bother anybody."

Actually, they chew the fire out of my log house. I have a lot of repairs to do because of those rats with blow driers. We shoot as many as we can get to.

A great solution..... squirrel catapault. http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/671128/

These aren't tree rats - they're ground squirrels. In my part of the country they are host to the fleas that carry bubonic plague. They burrow in grain fields and on the side of irrigation ditches, causing major destruction to grain fields when the inevitable blow-out occurs. They also draw badgers in for a feast. The badgers follow their tunnels and turn acrage into something resembling a mine field that was cleared by a mortar barrage. A big population of ground squirrels also encourages a larger population of coyotes - real good neighbors.

Nearly everyone here has a relative or friend who was killed or crippled when their horse stepped into one of these holes and broke a leg.
