Harry Kalas, the Phillies' Hall of Fame announcer, died at 1:20 p.m. today, the Phillies announced.
Mr. Kalas collapsed in the press box at Nationals Stadium in Washington at about 12:30 p.m. and was rushed to George Washington University Medial Center.
The cause of the death was not announced. Today's game against the Nationals will be played, but the team will not visit the White House tomorrow.
Kalas, who was found unconsious, missed most of spring training after undergoing undisclosed surgery in Feburary. That surgery was unrelated to the detached retina that sidelined him for part of last season.
Kalas, who turned 73 on March 26, has broadcast Phillies games since 1971. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 as the recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. He is entering the final season of a 3-year contract that he signed in December 2006.

Some great stories on harry kalas..
Very sad news. God bless and keep him.
I am listening to the Phillies radio team right now and they are struggling just to make it through the first inning. It’s gotta be tough to do this game after your dear friend has died. Most of us would be able to take a few days off work if someone near and dear to us passed but these guys have to go on and it tough.
Radio team lost it when Victorino Crossed the Plate and pointed to the Radio announcers Booth after his Home run!
Mr.Kalas had a very distinctive voice and delivery. Loved his work on football games over the radio.
Thanks, Vigilantcitizen.
I know you folks went through the same thing last summer with Skip Caray. The game we grew up on just won't be the same.
It makes me look back at all the things and people that I knew, that are now gone: The Vet, Whitey Ashburn, Harry the K.
A very sad day for the entire Delaware Valley.
