Grandmother cooks snails from garden to beat credit crunch
By Neil Sears 13th April 2009
Credit crunch: Oriole Parker-Rhodes has turned her garden snails into a tasty French feast
When snails besieged Oriole Parker-Rhodes garden and began eating all her potatoes, she came up with the perfect credit crunch solution.
If you can't beat them - eat them. For although the grandmother was unwilling to trample on or poison the troublesome creatures, after discovering they could make a tasty snack she decided to tuck in.
Now she regularly feasts on their meat, claiming they are higher in protein and lower in fat than beef. Her potatoes, meanwhile, are more likely to survive to be used as a side dish. And best of all, she does not have to shell out a penny.
Miss Parker-Rhodes, 59, of Anglesey, said: 'Last summer it was really wet and warm - ideal for snails. 'I had hundreds in my garden. I was treading on them, and they were also eating our home-grown potatoes. 'I'm quite an organic, perma-culture sort of person and didn't want to trample or poison them. That would be against my principles.
'So I thought eating them made sense.'
Miss Parker-Rhodes explained that the snails infesting her garden mainly of the variety Helix Aspersa, which were introduced by the Romans.

Yuck.
Bad idea. Some snails carry parasites that can kill you.
I suppose if they’re well cooked they’re ok, but there ARE parasites that dogs get from snails (lungworm) and I wouldn’t risk it myself.
Yum, Escargot, give me some garlic butter and melt some bleu cheese on top - a bit of crusty bread and a glass of wine.....ahhhh heaven!!
Why is this a negative, she is just discovering a delicacy. How is this different than growing your own herbs? Snails are good eats.
One hypenated word: “Bug-Getta”.
As soon as it stops raining this afternoon, I plan on sprinkling a bunch around the yard and garden. I absolutely detest snails and slugs.
When I was a kid, we used to pee on snails and slugs.
No...I didn’t become a serial killer!
This became a small fad in California in the late 70s, I believe the advice was to place them in a pan of corn meal for several days to cleanse their system.
I sprinkle eggshells around my hostas and it seems to work pretty well at keeping slugs away. “Slug-Go” also works well.
Beer. They love the smell and taste of beer, will climb into a cup of it and die. It’s the start of the marinating process, too. :)
My grandfather used to bring them home from the city and they turned out to be our pets.
Escargot is one thing....Common variety garden snails are something else!
We also do the “beer traps” but I swear, the neighbor slugs have heard about the party being at our house and it seems now we get hundreds more than we did before.
Not so much. I'd rather eat Alpo, before I resorted to backyard delicacies.
It's a lot easier for the ugly-chick slugs to get knocked up with beer around. Ahh, nature, gotta love it.
Now, if we can just get people to eat democrats
Dear Husband doesn't realize even Rubber would taste good seasoned with garlic, butter, and parsley.

Well, I put eggshells in my compost, and I will have to buy some more slug food soon. I’ll check out Slug-Go the next time.
Certainly not enough to offset any ‘credit crunch’.
