Credit crunch: Oriole Parker-Rhodes has turned her garden snails into a tasty French feast
When snails besieged Oriole Parker-Rhodes garden and began eating all her potatoes, she came up with the perfect credit crunch solution.
If you can't beat them - eat them. For although the grandmother was unwilling to trample on or poison the troublesome creatures, after discovering they could make a tasty snack she decided to tuck in.
Now she regularly feasts on their meat, claiming they are higher in protein and lower in fat than beef. Her potatoes, meanwhile, are more likely to survive to be used as a side dish. And best of all, she does not have to shell out a penny.
Miss Parker-Rhodes, 59, of Anglesey, said: 'Last summer it was really wet and warm - ideal for snails. 'I had hundreds in my garden. I was treading on them, and they were also eating our home-grown potatoes. 'I'm quite an organic, perma-culture sort of person and didn't want to trample or poison them. That would be against my principles.
'So I thought eating them made sense.'
Miss Parker-Rhodes explained that the snails infesting her garden mainly of the variety Helix Aspersa, which were introduced by the Romans.

Yes, but we like beer, and we don’t like Bug-Getta. Besides, if I use the beer trap method, then I (actually my husband) would have to empty the bowls. Bleeeccchhh!
I hope the snails didn’t eat her arugula, too.
Slugs rolled in flour and salt. Yum!
Just make sure you salt the flour and not the slugs directly.
;-)
