The British kept the £ and there's no political support in the US for abandonment of the dollar -- or at least, not more than there is for abandonment of our system of measurements in favor of the metric system (a transformation that was supposed to have taken place before our Bicentennial).
OTOH, I was also thinking about the jillions of topics regarding a multinational currency for the western hemisphere involving at least the US, Canada, and Mexico, a topic that surfaces once in a while, and bubbles up in topic after topic for a few weeks, then vanishes again for a while, so my apologies.
