The pins stick straight out the backside as they do on almost any military badge and are held on with a special clip that covers the pointed end inside the shirt.
They are not like safety pins at all.

Oh I already knew that, my comment was on how straight they lined them up as they slapped them in. That is a show of precision and of how much they honored their brother in arms.
