El Dorado, AR - A pit bulldog attacked a guide dog owned by a blind woman and police have arrested the pit bull's 17-year-old owner, but only after the woman worked for a month to get El Dorado authorities to take proper action.

The guide dog sustained face and neck injuries and had an infected wound. Witnesses say the boy enabled the attack and allowed it to continue.

"Swimming is a choice. We need to ban swimming in the ocean; all those shark attacks"

I've heard that one and I'm not impressed by the logic. It would make more sense if people bought sharks to bring to the beach to swim with the kids and others minding their own business. Your comment suggesting that I think government should ban anything that "poses a slight risk" to anyone is ignorant at best.

Hmmmm... Based on your comments to me, let me guess - you own a pit bull and it's the sweetest little family pet, always under control, and would never hurt another dog or anyone. The same for all pit bull owners - they are all significantly more responsible then other dog owners, and even more responsible then exotic pet owners - like mountain lions, alligators, etc. /sarc

And let’s hear again from those who delight in the incremental criminalization of everything.
“It’s for the chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiildrunn!”

The breed has a strong tendency to be violent in a bad environment. There’s way too many pits in bad environments these days being owned by people that don’t have a clue about caring for and raising dogs. That’s the worst possible combination for a pit. No wonder people and children are being killed by pits.

If ever there was a breed that needed to be outlawed, it’s the pit bull. I keep a gun handy just in case I need see a stray pit bull. I will ask no questions and claim it was going to attack me.

I would love to see the legislation for that. Let's outlaw a dog that may or may not be between thirty and eighty pounds, have drop or prick ears, a short or long muzzle, no specific pattern, be smooth or rough-coated, tall and slim or short and thick, any color including blue, red, brown, black, white, fawn, speckled, spotted, or any combination thereof.

Sound like any dog you know?

Dogs that kill or attack are every bit as criminal as when a human kills or attacks...My children are all in their 40’s or 50’s. I don't dislike those dogs because its for the chiiiiiiiiiiiiiiildrnn. They are bred to fight other animals. Its in their makeup just like herding is in the makeup of a sheepdog. From what I have read, the original animal these dogs were bred for was bull baiting..They are like a loaded gun. In the wrong hands chiiiiiiiiiiildren die. They don't need to be outlawed, the way to keep people from having this breed is make the insurance needed to keep them so high, very few people could afford it..I read your homepage, don't take it so personal just because you own the breed.

So you’re allowed to project, but I’m not?
And you want to force me to buy insurance I don’t need because you don’t like the way my dog looks, then demand I ‘stop taking it so personal’?
All you’re going to do is force people like me to pay through the nose or destroy their dogs...While the meth dealer on the corner keeps his unvaccinated, unneutered, uninsured animal just the same as he would if there were no insurance requirement.
You may be pleased to know that Texas is contemplating mandatory insurance on any dog over 40 pounds. If that happens, my dog Swiper is going to die. But hey, I try not to take it personal. Hopefully my kids won’t either.

The state demands car insurance to protect the other guy. I see no reason not to demand insurance for certain breeds that are known to be vicious. Your dog looks sweet..and your pink, blue, yellow white poodle that passed away also looks sweet...You love your animals, we all do, many dogs bite, but pit breeds kill...(Also Rottys) both breeds are beautiful, but odds are they are more likely to attach and do serious damage then most breeds..

You’ve got that right. According to HB 1982, and dog over 40lbs can be declared ‘vicious’ without leaving it’s yard, biting anyone, or doing anything more unusual than barking at the fence. They can be declared vicious because of it’s ‘physical nature’, or the potential capability of causing injury or death.
Dogs over 40 pounds must be contained within secure enclosures in cities populated by more than 1 million people, etc.

Well, I appreciate that very much. Compliment my pets and I am forced to love you. :-)

My dog IS very sweet and I love him...But not so much that I can afford to keep him in heartworm medicine, yearly vaccinations, decent kibble, pave my back yard, install a secure dog run, AND buy liability insurance for him.
If I thought he was likely to hurt anyone I wouldn’t own him, and I need the government to trust me on that.

However, if this law passes, the cold hard reality is that my car and the associated insurance is necessary to survival; the dog is not.

Then just declare open season on anything that even resembles a pit.

Once again, I’d love to see that. No weimereiner, boxer, labrador, bulldog, or German shorthair would be safe from the Timorous Idiot Brigade.

None of those dogs even vaguely resemble a Pit Bull with the possible exception of a bulldog. I guess that would be collateral damage in an open season on Pits.
