I'm finally buying a handgun this week, after a long time wanting one, my wife finally relented.
I know I want a 9mm. (No, I don't want anything bigger than that.) It's mostly for target shooting, and to have around the house, not for concealed carry.
The two I'm interested in are the Glock and the Springfield Armory XD-M. I'm torn between the two.
Those that know handguns far better than I do...which would you choose, and why?
Either is a fine weapon. More important than which weapon is how much you will practice with it and how capable you are of using it if you ever need to save your life.
That said, if I’m not mistaken the Glock has a standard 15 round magazine. the Springfield XD-M has a 18 round magazine. You may need those three rounds some day.
I initialy liked the idea of the grip safety on the XD. Then heard more about the XDM. I have large hands, and the XDM felt good (has three different handle grip sizes).
I got the XDM .40. Points real nice for me. First time with a handgun and from 15 yards to 25 yards got two magazines (32 shots) all in a 10”x10” circle on a sheet of newspaper out in the woods. Later found out I should have started out closer! But, the local range said you have to be able to hit a 2’ x 2’ target at 25 yards and I didn’t know if I would be able to or not.
Lots of information at a site called www.xdtalk.com
Obviously very pro XD, but some talk on failures, etc. In general it seems that the failures have been related to poor technique, etc. (Lots of pistol newbies - like me). Also, lots of guys with both Glocks and XD’s (and other stuff).
I suppose that's true, although I do prefer the XD. If one were to select firearms based on parts availability during rough times, the 1911 and AR-15 are the obvious choices. My "SHTF" handgun is a tweaked Colt Gold Cup.
The Glocks have three independent safeties, all of which go off automatically when you pull the trigger and all of which go right back on when you release the trigger. It is a brilliant, simple design - if you don’t want to shoot something, keep your finger off the trigger. Another decent feature is that you can dry-fire the GLock all day for practice. It is impossible to have an AD with a Glock; NDs can happen to people who pull the trigger at the wrong time...
I love it! Plenty accurate with the iron sights out to 70 yards. I keep it in a generic CheaperThanDirt.com 18" wide bag, folded. The bag holds 6 extra magazines, and with one in the rifle I have a goodly amount of firepower.
It's my truck/car gun, plenty of firepower, VERY reliable, eats anything I feed it, easy to shoot, lightweight, and low cost. What's not to like?
Full size XD-m. I got the Glock, but I also have a S&W Sigma 9 (a Glock clone), so maybe that's why I like the Glock. But the XD-m was more accurate for me, and I really like shooting a buddies S&W 5902 (Beretta 92 clone).
how is the accuracy on your Kel Tec SUB 2000. Also the durability. Kel Tec makes some neat little guns. Ruger also has a new carry 9 mm with 15+ capacity and a good price.
Accuracy is great, and I have aboout 800 rounds through it so far without a problem. Some people over at KTOG have over 5000 rounds through theirs without a problem. It's plenty reliable. And if you want big capacity, those 33 round Glock mags fit REAL nice in the handle...:)
I'm sold on Kel Tec - great American gun, great prices, fit good niches. My daily carry is a P32 - it's never let me down, is tiny and lightweight, and can get the job done. The SUB 2000 is a kick to shoot, extremely compact (16" long folded), very reliable. And the SU-16A is a great hiking/packing rifle - plenty of firepower, takes AR-15 mags (Magpuls rock), and weighs in at 5 pounds complete!
Many who buy them because they’re cheap.
Overpressure 9mm. Probably a combination of too much powder, too loose a crimp on the bullet. Primer was totally flat when we found it, case was split in half and completely deformed around the breach and feed ramp, and the round made a noticeably louder sound.
Here’s more info in case anyone is interested.
Personally I think it’s grip because a shot analysis target says “jerking or tightening fingers”.
That’s what I was going to say. Although, anticipating the recoil could also drop the shot.
Try Squeezing the trigger You are most likely jerking the trigger.
I was squeezing, but I think I was flinching ahead of the shot. I had to aim everything high and to the right, and then I did fine.
The Glock is more resilient, more time tested and has more corporate support for gun owners.
Extra magazines for the Glock are more prevalent and cheaper...much much cheaper...holsters are more available.
Im sticking with my Glock 19 and my walther P99
If you want to shoot reloads, then go for the XD...it has a supported chamber, which the Glock does not.
These days, however, it does seem easier to find an XD on the shelves than a new Glock..so if you want to get one now, and can’t wait..you won’t lose if you opt for the new NEWER NEWEST variant called the XDM you won’t come up short..just get as many of the extra 19 round magazines as you can.
I bought the XD-M yesterday.
I’ve got the S&W M&P 45. No complaints.
Good..now practice..and get all the extra mags you can afford.
www.cdnninvestments.com is a very good place to find these mags for sale on line.
Keep in mind that during the last AWB high capacity pistol mags (more than ten rounds) were banned for sale. The aftermarket for glock 9mm mags were crazy. In 2000-2005, people were paying $100 or more for $25 glock mags..the same for sig sauer and other mags.
I urge you to get as many as you can afford.
If I’m not mistaken, I believe I read somewhere recently that there are also 20 round XDM mags out there for sale.
High cap mags are a fantastic future investment..they will never be worth less than you paid for them.
The standard mag that comes with the XDM 9 mm holds 19 bullets, plus I guess you can have one in the chamber, for a total of twenty. I’ll have to look into buying extra mags.
How many police departments and government agencies in the United States use Glocks? And how many use 1911s?
If the S really HTF and you found yourself picking up a gun off a dead officer, what are the chances it would be a 1911 vs a Glock?
If things hit rock bottom, then yeah, use whatever you can "liberate".
Ni how ma, PSS.
Can you carry in China or just in WA?
