Labs are inveterate food thieves and they are very clever about it.
My little (41 pound) Chocolate Lab sneaked into the kitchen while I was baking a cake. The layers were cooling at the very back of the counter, right up against the backsplash beside the sink. That darned dog jumped up, hooked her elbows into the sink, and pulled herself forward far enough to stretch her neck out and start eating the layer closest to the sink. She got 2-3 good big bites out of it before I caught her. I just trimmed around the bites and assembled the cake with a wedge out of the top layer . . . :-(
