Pit Bull Attacks Family in Anne Arundel County
ABC ^

Edgewater, MD - Less than 24 hours after the attack, James Powell carries the wounds from a stray dog that showed up at the door of his Edgewater home and attacked him.

"When I reached for the door, he came under my arm and just... and it was instant... gone," said Powell, who stumbled inside the house with the pit bull on his heels, which then attacked his wife and son.

"About 15 minutes, we were fighting for our lives,” said Dana Powell, “We knew if we let this dog go, it was going to be bad. He came in like a bull in a China shop. It was unbelievable. I have never seen anything like that before in my life."

As the Powells struggled to restrain the dog, James saw his wife’s life was in jeopardy.

"His teeth was right in her face,” recalled James, “So that's when I pulled my knife out and I stuck my knife in his throat just to kill him to stop him."

But even that wasn’t enough.

"The dog just didn't want to stop,” said the Powell’s son, Brandon, “The cop had to shoot him six more times after we cut his throat."

Paramedics transported members of the Powell family here to the Anne Arundel Medical Center with varying degrees of injuries, and James was the worst.

He was missing part of his face.

Back at the family’s home, another son, Chad, would make a gruesome discovery that would help to make him whole again.

"It was sitting on that square rock over there and my brother saw it and he picked it up and he thought it was a piece of the dog,” said Brandon Powell, “and then he looked at it and saw that is was my Dad's mustache and lip and everything and he put it in a bag of ice and ran it up to the hospital."

It took doctors hours of surgery and more than 100 stitches to repair the damage.

Anne Arundel County Police say the dog’s owner, Karim Abdalla, has received civil citations for allowing it to run at large and for having an animal that poses a threat to public safety.

The family says they’ve been told he will be paying their medical bills.

"Big sticks work too but you have to hit the dog hard on the head before he chomps on you."

Yes. Some kind of gig would work, too--something like a trident or a pitch fork with straight prongs and barbs. ...could turn some locales back toward allowing openly carried firearms around meth/pit bull houses.

>>>>It's how you raise them.

That is a fallacy, it’s how some dogs are born. I had a Jack Russel that I got when he was 6 weeks old and raise with care and kindness. He turned out to be the meanest biter i ever saw.
