Many movies are good, some are great, but only a select few can be called truly "essential." After heated discussions, long negotiations, and a shouting match or two, the staff at Yahoo! Movies has put together this list of the 100 films you must see before you die.
To choose the titles for the list, we considered factors like historical importance and cultural impact. But we also selected films that we believe are the most thrilling, most dramatic, scariest, and funniest movies of all time. Some of these films you've seen, and some you may not have heard of, but we believe that each one is a timeless classic that you absolutely have to see.

Thanks.
It’s encouraging that SOME FREEPERS have something besides blind sleepy sawdust between their ears!
Much appreciate your encouragement.
No Bicycle Thieves, no City Lights, no The General, it’s a pretty uneven list.
LOL.
I know its easy to become disillusioned with people, but if calling people “chronic” and “ill-informed”, “Wilfully-blind” and “walking dead” is your way of convincing them I would suggest you do give up on it. Resorting to a form of emotional blackmail by impugning people’s intelligence is the act of the con-artist and the charlartan. You discredit your own theory by doing it.
Just the way I see it. Nothing personal about it in the least.
I can only assume we are being facetious here.
Best war movies are difficult to categorize as they run the gamut of human experience.
IMHO, Saving Private Ryan had some of the best special effects which probably placed the movie watcher in the theater in the experience of the battlefield, without, of course, the added element of fear or courage in facing real life threatening adversity with unknown outcome. It gave a feel of being downrange with impacts landing around your position.
Very few soldiers, sailors, airmen, or Marines fought in more than one Operation during the World Wars due to logistics and casualty rates, so in some respects, Catch-22 was a more accurate war film.
The Longest Day, Tora, Tora, Tora!, Midway and In Harm's Way helped communicate the perspective of the war from both sides when they were made,...to a limited extent, as does Clint Eastwood's recent film about Iwo Jima.
You are quite right, of course.
And I do appreciate the thoughtfulness of your exhortation.
And, there may be a significant number quite ‘turned off’ by such a style.
Whether that number is greater than the number of those who in their outrage, annoyance etc. remember such things long enough for them to continue niggling at them fruitfully, I don’t know.
And, with some, I do have a different tone.
On the whole, however, I’m not sure that I’ll have a ton of peace to alter the style as much as ‘reason’ might seem to dictate.
Christ persistently wound up the religious leaders of His earthly days. I can’t think of a Scripture where He was gracious with them—certainly NOT those with an ATTITUDE.
Do I misjudge such attitudes on occasion. Certainly. And I hate being so flawed in such things. Alas, the only thing I’ve ever been able to figure out how to be—is human—mercifully redeemed by The Blood of The Lamb.
1. Those with eyes to see and ears to hear . . . typically . . . don’t need a lot of persuading. Gently presented info is sufficient for them.
2. Those willfully blind will not likely learn from anything presented any way.
3. Those in between are a mixed lot. MANY OF THOSE will remember and ponder provocatively, prickly presented information longer to more fruitful eventual results than they will mild mannered info.
4. Those in between more inclined to learn from mild mannered info have a lot of folks to read other than moi. I certainly don’t write for everyone.
It’s a dilemma. It likely always will be this side of Armageddon.
Best war films?
“Gettysburg” is excellent. A good historical drama all round in fact.
“Battle of Britain” is flawed, but has very good air combat sequences (done by pilots who flew in the real thing)
The German film “Das Boot” is the best submarine film of all time, without question, although the series was even better.
