The US has deported to Austria a former Nazi death camp guard, Josias Kumpf. The move sheds light on the continuing search - in some countries, at least - for World War II war criminals. Mario Cacciottolo examines a hunt now entering its final phase.
"Looking for Nazi war criminals is the ultimate law enforcement race against the clock."
Eli Rosenbaum, director of the Office of Special Investigations (OSI) in the United States, has a list of thousands of suspects.
But working out whether any of them are alive and in the US is a laborious job.
A full check could take 100 years at current rates, he says - but in 10 years "the World War II biological clock will come to an end".
Contrary to popular belief, most former Nazis did not go into hiding after the war. Most did not even change their name.
There were some - such as Adolf Eichmann, who planned the transport of Jews to death camps, and Dr Joseph Mengele, Auschwitz's "Angel of Death"-who slipped away amid the post-war chaos and assumed false identities.
But the majority simply took off their uniforms, went home, and got a job.
And for a crucial period in the 1950s,little was done to track them down, experts say.
Justice 'not done'
"More could have been done, but there was a lack of political will. Not from 1945 to 1948, but after that," says Jean-Marc Dreyfus, lecturer in Holocaust studies at the University of Manchester.
"Around 1953 the Nazi trials stopped, and it's important to note that the Cold War was the reason why.
"The West needed a strong West Germany and did not want to spend time hunting for Nazis, many of which were now part of the society and even the Federal Republic government.

Maybe they should hunt down that fool Elie Weasel who is slobbering all over Obama. Elie is helping Hamas by help O. He is a fool.
It’s great that they’re trying to find these monsters, but it still doesn’t appear that any form of justice is being carried out.
They’ll face they’re final judgment soon enough I guess.
I think it’s time to close up the hunt. The war has been over for 64 years. That means that any serious war criminals would have to be at least 84 years, probabaly much older since the younger soldiers were likely not in a position to be war criminals. My timeline supposes that the dates correspond with the end of the 67 years ago., so that would mean they would be about 87 years plus of age. How can we really believe these peole are identifiable by living witnesses. They would not look like they did at age 20 - nor would the memories of the survivors still be considered to be adequate to condemn another person.
I cannot identify many of my HS classmates from 50 years ago. Some I can as they have not changed much, but alot of them have changed greatly. So, how can we rely on the memories of children who were traumatized over 64 years ago?
All that means is that these guys lived 64 more years than they should have. They don't deserve to die on their own terms.
It is time to start hunting and deporting the modern Nazis, the kind who preach the same brand of hatred but under the banner of the religion of peace.
Interestingly, with the exception of Cambodia there is no attempt at all being made to track down the perpetrators of Communist crimes. In fact, many Communist murderers remain in power.
During the 20th century, Nazis killed about 12M innocent people. Commies killed about 100M. Of course, to be completely fair, Commies had both a larger population base to work with and much more time to do their killing.
The hunt of the last Nazi’s is drawing to a close. The only Nazi’s left to hunt were 17 at the time of the crimes - so we’re now left hunting the “trainees”. All the real villiams are now long gone, sadly, many of them died of old age. But so did Pol Pot so I guess we can all say in unison “the world ain’t fair.”
Time to look for a new group of villains to hunt.
Sherman Logan is correct. For whatever reason, a lot of the world has given the communist killers a free ride. Is this a sad testimony of some victim count, some don’t?
