3/20/2009-photo/C.M.Guerrero/el Nuevo Herald- Luis Grass, a car mechanic at Maroone Chevrolet on Tamiami Trail & Lejeune Road, sits atop a replica of the original Chevrolet homemade Amphibious truck that chugged along the Florida Straights in 2003, as they escaped from the island of Cuba. The original was stopped by the U.S Coast Guard and intentionally sunk to the bottom of the sea. Luis Grass and his friend rebuilt a version of the original, sponsored by Maroone Chevrolet.

During the summer of 2003, an identical model was ingeniously adapted to float in calm waters. The truck was "driven" across the Florida Straits all the way from Cuba, hauling 12 Cuban refugees seeking new lives in the United States.
