Saturday morning a live WWII era hand grenade was found amid piles of debris in the backyard of a central Austin, Texas residence. Area neighbors found the grenade while removing the remnants of a collapsed garage as part of a community outreach/ assistance program for elderly property owners. Local authorities were notified, the area blocked off by police, some nearby residents evacuated and the Austin Police Department bomb squad brought in to identify, contain and dispose of the munition. The grenade was safely detonated by the APD bomb squad in a nearby empty lot at 50th Street and Harmon Avenue around 2:15 p.m.
You go right ahead and trust that 70 year old three-to-five second fuse that's been sitting out in the elements for God only knows how long. I'll be 'round the corner.
New grenade? Sure thing. Some relic of WWII? No way.
Wow, where is Harmon? My daughter goes to UT and lives near 47th and Duvall.
About 1 mile East of 47th and Duval.
I’ll bet they had to trigger it with explosives, and that it did not simply detonate from pulling the pin.
hmmm
Uhhh
ok
here, hold muh beer!
I dunno. Pull pin and find out.
Good grief! Thanks for the info.
When I was a 13 year old in the country, my friend and I found some old wet dynamite we were playing with in an old shack. We took it to show the owner of the property and he turned really white.
Bomb guys came out and blew up the shack. Sometimes angels are watching over you and you don’t know it at the time.
Yep, SOP for disposal- much safer that way.

That’s our WWII vets, always prepared!
Austin is my backyard.
