I saw that episode on Bizarre Foods. He gagged when he ate the durian.

I’ve seen Andrew Zimmern do his anti-durian schtick in two different episodes of Bizarre Foods (once in Thailand and once in NYC).
He’s a little over the top with all the heaving and gagging, I simply think he’s targeted durian as “the food that’s so disgusting that even I Andrew Zimmern who eats disgusting foods with gusto will not eat it.”
C’mon Andrew, get off it. They sell durian POPSICLES at my local Asian market and they are good and even little kids like them. Durian ice cream as well. Even my siblings who are meat & potatoes types didn’t gag when they tried durian.

Yes, but as I mention above it’s got to be a staged overreaction.
I know people who don’t like it, but I’ve never seen anyone (except Zimmern) actually GAG on durian. That includes both SE Asians and Westerners in both Asia and here in the States.
I’d like to try a pummelo. Largest fruit, sweeter than a grapefruit. If I lived in NYC or San Fran I’d try to find one in Chinatown.
Wal Mart has them in the Fall. I get one every year and really enjoy it. I'm on low carb, so there isn't much sweet fruit in my diet, but pummelos are great. I do eat a lot of botanical fruits like cucumber, tomatoes and peppers though.

Had durian at the local Asian market yesterday.
Are those mirlitons on the lower right? I was thinking about trying to grow those this year.

The pummelo (or "pomelo") just doesn't seem to grow well under U. S. soil conditions. My experience of traveling to Asia during the past 40+ years indicates that you gotta go to Vietnam (ask for buoi) or Thailand (order som oh) if you want the real thing. And for me, the native Asian pommelo is definitely the world's tastiest citrus!
A bit of good news from the home front, however, is that U.S.-grown pummelos seem to be getting better. Ten years ago they tasted just like grapefruit. Now you can find them with a taste that's 50% or even 75% like the Asian versions.
My guess is that quality has improved as a few growers in Texas or Florida have found a way to improve the soil chemistry of their orchards. Let's just hope the taste of the American pomelo will someday rise to Southeast Asian levels!
I can’t vouch for the Asian ones but the South American one are superb.
Wow not even Bizzare Food’s Andrew Zimern can take that: (personally I’ve never seen one), but how do you do it? (Does it really taste like ‘rotten onions’ like Andrew likes to say?).

No. It does not.
I like Zimmern’s show but his comments on durian seem insincere.
Actually durian smells like a kerosense milk shake but tastes like coconut and pear soap custard.

Ya gotta admit, when the best thing you can say about a fruit is “they didn’t gag when they tried it” then it has to be pretty bad.

I was surprised he gagged on the durian, considering how many disgusting things he’s eaten. I’d try it. Did you see the stinky tofu he ate? Now THAT would make me gag. I’m sure a lot of that is staged.
Of course, in this country, it is worshiped.
