ATLANTA — In a cultural war that has pitted Old South against new, defenders of the Confederate legacy have opened a fresh front in their campaign to polish an image tarnished, they said, by people who do not respect Southern values.

With the 150th anniversary of the War Between the States in 2011, efforts are under way in statehouses, small towns and counties across the South to push for proclamations or legislation promoting Confederate history.

Did you actually read it? Lee says slavery is an evil...for the slave owner. As for the slave, they are "immeasurably better off". He claims the "painful discipline they are undergoing is necessary for their further instruction as a race, and will prepare them, I hope, for better things." By this time that 'painful discipline' had been going on for 250 years, did Lee believe that slaves were slow learners? As for doing anything to speed up the process, well, Lee left that "in the hands of Him who, chooses to work by slow influences, and with whom a thousand years are but as a single day." And what about those advocating an end to slavery? He had "neither the right not the power of operating, except by moral means; that to benefit the slave..." because God knows that your mustn't "excite angry feelings in the master..." Bear in mind that at the time he was writing that, Lee himself was one of those masters. And that 9 years later Lee's position was that "the relation of master and slave, controlled by humane laws and influenced by Christianity and an enlightened public sentiment, as the best that can exist between the white and black races while intermingled as at present in this country..."

Lee paid lip service to the evils of slavery, nothing more. If it had continued for another hundred years then it would be perfectly fine with him, as his letter makes clear.

Indenture was temporary. It was also a contract; in exchange for three to seven years of work you were expected to come out of it with a trade and be able to make your own way in the world. Carve out your own future. Slavery was forever. You were a slave. Your children were slaves. Your grandchildren would be slaves. Not a whole lot of upward mobility in that.
