Should ski helmets be compulsory?

The death of Natasha Richardson has sparked a debate about whether it should be mandatory for skiers and snowboarders to wear helmets. There's been a sharp rise in the number of people wearing helmets after several high-profile ski accidents this winter and some compulsion has already come in. However, the medical evidence is not conclusive and it's not thought any widespread compulsion is imminent in the Alps.

Heh. Sorry about your concussions, but you don't have to take out your anger on a person wanting to protect others from getting concussions of their own.

Oh well....too late for me. More sports related concussions than I can easily count! Probably explains a lot...or so my wife would say.

Already gave my opinion but I am going to add something. If skiers allow this to happen the next step will be for them to take a test and obtain a skiing(and skateboarding)license. You will have to renew it periodically, register your skis and pay a registration fee.

Think not? Think again. The camels nose under the tent. Helmets today, license tomorrow, there is a whole segment of the population out there on the ski slopes that haven't been taxed yet and I bet they are chomping at the bit to get to it.

Oh please. You insulted me directly; I insulted nameless and faceless skiers. I'm not surprised that you don't understand the difference. Unless, of course, you do consider yourself to be a reckless moron and took offense to me calling you out.

Sorry, Carling, I am going to have to side with eagle eye on this one. You insulted everyone who skis without a helmet, and that apparently includes Eagle Eye, you didn't have to mention him by name, the remark covered him and everyone who skis without helmets. A person does not have to be a reckless moron to take offense at being called one. You may consider skiing without a helmet to be bad but you could have worded your comment differently. Eagle Eye had every justification in coming after you on it.

I don't ski BTW(not anymore, used to cross country ski)but would not wear a helmet unless I felt my skill wasn't up to par. Millions of people ski every year, how many do you think get head injuries from not wearing helmets? How many do you think are reckless morons?

Should ski helmets be compulsory?

Yes - I believe that if one person in a world of billions of people dies as a result of not wearing a ski helmet, then everyone else should be required by law to wear helmets.

Furthermore, if there is intelligent life on Mars, they, too, should be required by law to wear ski helmets.

And even furthermore, if one person stubs their toe, everyone in the world, all billions and billions of them, should be required by law to wear big poofy protective bag-socks, filled with 3 inch protective foam pads.

The police should be required to check each house and each person twice daily to make sure that everyone is wearing their poofy bag-socks at all times.

Poof It, Or Ticket!

As I understand it, her injuries would not have been prevented by a helmet. It was apparently a whiplash type injury that caused her to develop a blood clot that may have caused her death.

So what you're saying is that all of us are in danger of this whiplash type thingee, and that we should all be required to wear ski helmets at all times, even when we're just posting on the Internet.

I heard that today, Christopher Dodd, Barney Frank and The Teleprompter Of The United States have all come out in favor of mandatory ski helmet usage while Internet posting.

I'm behind it all the way.

Considering that Eagle Eye admits he’s had numerous concussions, I feel his anger is misplaced since I am simply advocating that not wearing a PPE that can protect the head from concussions is reckless and moronic IMO.

If people want to increase their odds of being concussed or even dying when a simple helmet can help protect them, then I’ll continue to think that action is both reckless and moronic. You “siding” with a poster over me doesn’t change my personal opinion, and if people are offended by a generic insult, then that’s their problem.

I've been on a ski patrol in my younger days, witnessed first hand one death when I wasn't patrolling (but assisted with the aftermath), and have assisted with dozens of concussions while on patrol.

I can understand where you are coming from, your having been a member of the National Ski Patrol. Ski Patrol members have seen more than their share of fluke type accidents along with the garden-variety ones. You probably also feel 'naked' skiing without communications gear & a First Aid kit.

I also SCUBA dive. I was taught in Search & Recovery work by an instructor who was both a Navy & Police diver. Consequently I dive with a lot of 'optional' equipment that I consider absolutely necessary from a safety standpoint. Your average "sport diver" would consider me to be over-equipped. It's all about training, experience & context.

I presume that most of you by now have heard about the tragic, untimely death of actress Natasha Richardson. The following (I no longer have the link) was reported yesterday:

“The statement did not give details on the cause of death for Richardson, who suffered a head injury when she fell on a beginner’s trail during a private ski lesson at the luxury Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York.” [emphasis mine]

I’m sure that I’m not the only one of us LRC blog folks who, upon learning the above information, thought something to the effect: Why did she have to be flown to a “greedy capitalist pig/awful healthcare system/second-rate” New York City hospital when she was already in a “progressive/universal healthcare/first-rate” Canadian hospital—especially considering the delicacy and seriousness of her condition?

But, of course, that’s not the issue to be concerned with according to the Establishment. The issue is, you guessed it, whether it should be MANDATORY to wear ski helmets when skiing:

” “Richardson’s shocking death greatly heightened the debate over skiing safety. Quebec, for instance, is considering making helmets mandatory on ski hills. Jean-Pascal Bernier, a spokesman for Quebec Sport and Leisure Minister Michelle Courchesne, said Thursday the death of Richardson at a Quebec resort has added impetus to plans [emphasis mine] but says they it was [sic] already on the table.” “

Given the current cost of lift tickets, you should be able to ski nude if you want.........

Due the rising costs of tickets, equipment, bar tabs, air fare, housing, etc..., skiing has become a luxury sport of the elites who can afford the sport and unfortunately most of those elites are coming from the ranks of liberals.

I grew up with skis on my feet in northern Michigan and have made many ski trips throughout this country and Canada but now that I'm retired, I can't afford the sport any more.

Do I miss it? Yea, I sure do but I don't miss the attitudes of the people I encountered in my last trip to British Columbia back in 2003............

Yes, and if they had diagnosed and treated her correctly she likely would still be with us today. The hospital she was in reportedly had a CAT machine, no MRI machine, they took her by ambulance on a 90-minute drive to the hospital she was in when they diagnosed her brain dead. If they had done the scans, saw the clot, drilled a hole and drained the pressure/clot/blood, before the pressure cut off blood flow to the critical parts of her brain she could have possibly survived... this is why they always refer to the “golden” hour of treatment for accident and trauma patients.

Exactly. Doctor Atkins slipped on ice in NYC, hit his head and died from a clot at the hospital... should everyone walking on icy sidewalks be required to wear a helmet?

Actually it was determined. She had a blood clot on the back of the skull, without the pressure being released it presses on the brain until it squeezes off the critical blood flow and the brain dies... releasing the clot would have released the pressure.

Sometimes kids who have had an injury to the head or surgery on the head will have to wear helmets as extra protection.
