If there's a stage that trained Danny Gokey for his run at this season's "American Idol" crown, you'll find it in a former movie theater across from Mitchell International Airport, where Faith Builders International uses music to preach the gospel.
"We knew he could sing a little bit," said Faith Builders Pastor Jeff Pruitt.
Pruitt met Gokey in 1999. By the end of 2000, he had joined the then-fledgling church, which had 50 members. It now regularly brings in hundreds of people for its weekly services at 4901 S. Howell Ave., the location of the former Skyway Cinema.
Gokey joined Faith Builders' "worship team," which leads the singing that is a key part of this scripture-based Christian church.
"I was actually leading praise and worship at the time," said Pruitt. "And I was thinking, 'This guy is really good.' "
He asked a stunned Gokey to take over the worship team.
"The rest is history," said Pruitt, as Gokey began to lead the musical side of the church and its sister congregation in Beloit. He was active in the role until last year, when his wife, Sophia, died.
"Idol's" producers have made Gokey's wife's death - during what should have been routine surgery to install a pacemaker - a key part of the package. While Gokey admits her death is a driving force behind his quest to win "Idol," he's quick to say he's not the one bringing it up.

The man surely has talent. That he is seemingly not professionally trained he’s very impressive.
Blessed are the meek.
Blessed are the poor in spirit.
I guess Jesus forgot “blessed are the American Idols” when he preached the sermon on the mount.
