Gokey a Safe Bet to Advance

The votes aren’t in yet, but there’s no doubt Danny Gokey is safe.

Gokey is the Milwaukee church musician who breezed into the “American Idol” finals with some powerful blue-eyed soul in the wake of his wife’s death last summer.

Recent commentary has criticized Idol for exploiting the death of Gokey’s wife, Sophia, but at least last night it wasn’t a factor.

Performing on a Michael Jackson-themed night—which is an, um, interesting choice at best—Gokey unquestionably had one of the best performances with a cover of “P.Y.T.“ from the ‘80s mega-album “Thriller.“ The singing was accompanied by some rather awkward dance moves—no moon walk here. His vocal ability, however, is not in much question.

A Los Angeles Times blog this morning is already predicting a finals showdown between Gokey and Goth-looking rocker Adam Lambert after the latter’s energetic rendition of “Black and White.“

Predictions on “Idol” can be dicey with fickle voting trends, and at the end of the show it was indicated there would be a change in the format regarding the judges. My guess is they will give themselves some sort of veto power over what they view as bad decisions by voters. Either way, Gokey and his voice honed at Faith Builders International Ministries should have smooth sailing for now.

I find it interest there is already a backlash against Danny simply because he does a lot of work in church...probably comes from the gay adam lambert's fans...theyre already saying its danny vs adam and it will be like pro and anti prop 8 all over again LOL.

Lambert has an edge with his theatrical background, even if he does remind me of your typical 27-year old do-nothing who lives in his mom’s basement.

This might be “typical” somewhere...but not in my neighborhood. ;)

There are three worship leaders in their respective church in the Top 13: Danny Gokey (WI), Michael Sarver (TX), and Kris Allen (AR).

They’re all good, and so far none of them is in bottom 3.

Next week, the theme will be The Grand Ole Opry...

I like them all...honestly I only see Gokey getting far. Sarver and Allen’s time is numbered (though I think Allen will at least make it past top 7). It will come down to Gokey vs Lambert. IMO

No, I think Adam’s appeal will wear thin before that point. He’s too over-the-top, and eventually the pictures of him making out with another guy are going to work against him.

I’ll place my bet on Danny vs. either Allison or Alexis.

At that point, the judges will use their new "save" rule to keep him in the competition. I suspect the rule was designed for him specifically.

Depends. The judges aren’t idiots. Well, maybe Paula is. And Kara. And frequently Randy.

But the point is, they see the voting results, and they know who’s been polling strongly and who’s losing support. The “save” will only be used for someone who has generally strong support and just a bad week — they won’t use it to bail out someone who’s trending down over several weeks.

That "might" give new meaning to "might." LOL!

Sad. What a waste!

I think he’s pretty strong though. The fact that he’s gay hasn’t seemed to cost him, even to young girls.
