WASHINGTON President Obama declared in an interview that the United States was not winning the war in Afghanistan and opened the door to a reconciliation process in which the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban, much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq.

I’m no fan of Obama but this is no great departure. Bush did exactly the same thing by putting the Sunni insurgents on the U.S. payroll.

I don’t expect Obama to go too radical on foreign affairs. I think he’ll largely follow Bush’s lead. He needs foreign stability inorder to pass his radical domestic agenda to remake America into a Euro-Socialist state.
