>>>The car goes over the cliff and the young kid barely gets out in time. The police vehicle is a flying machine, the cop looks like a futuristic soldier and he says “What is your name?” The little boy stands up and proclaims proudly “My name is James Tiberius Kirk!” THAT is a perfect scene.

Perhaps good cinema, not good Trek. The only canon descriptions of young James Kirk s described by his First Officer Gary Mitchell who had known him the longest, were that he was serious to the point of being grim, and studious as though he were a book with legs. Continuously the losing end of jokes and harassment at the Academy, as per Kirk’s recollection. Is that the Kird the trailer shows ?

But then what’s 40 years of continuity.

Didn’t Socrates say there are only 20 basic plots in any story.

Actually I think it is more redemption rather than wash outs.

It is usually some student who is not living up to his potential and somehow redeems himself.

The police vehicle is a flying machine, the cop looks like a futuristic soldier and he says “What is your name?”

Is that what Roddenberry's hopeful vision of a shining future has become? In 150 years we're all still going to be hassled by traffic cops? Yeesh.

This post is weeks old, but what the heck, I'll respond anyway...

Never Give Up, Never Surrender. -Cpt. Taggert

**************************

You know, I *hated* that movie when it came out, because, well, it was making fun of my, well, epiphany. But it really grew on me.

Now, it is one of my favorites. Terribly under-rated, and screamed for a series of sequels.

I agree completely - they could've done an entire "new" Galaxy Quest series (as seen in the closing credits) spoofing many of the classic Trek plotlines. Hell, Futurama got plenty of mileage out of that. I think Tim Allen would've done sequels or even a series, but I'm not sure whether Alan Rickman or Sigourney Weaver would've wanted to become permanent Sci-Fi fixtures. Pity, too - both of them were extremely good in those roles.

I love the "...take a left, then straight on through the chompers." scene. Gwen says "Well *forget* that... THIS EPISODE WAS BADLY WRITTEN!", but when you watch closely, you see Sigourney's lips form a word somewhat shorter than "forget". Even if they chose to do an audio dub there to save time, the result is doubly entertaining.

D'oh!! Yeah, I guess Ms. Weaver is stuck in the genre, after all. I guess I tend to think of the Alien films as belonging more to the horror category. And I was really thinking more of Rickman, whose character was actually lamenting being typecast and stuck doing fan conventions and other lame stuff.

"By Grabthar's Hammer - what a savings." :-)

Since I have managed to resuscitate this thread, let me return to the original topic and ask:

Does anyone else see something wrong with the idea of a young James Kirk driving a classic Corvette?

Classic, adrenaline-inducing historic ride is part of the Kirk personality.

Yeah, but Kirk also has a noted inability to drive a stick-shift (see "A Piece of the Action": "..Gears, Mr. Spock...").

Guess he learned how when he was young, but later forgot...
