“To this day I sometimes apply their theme to what is going on. Such as, Here we come, walkin down the street. Hey Hey we’re the people going to the park. You’d be surprised how many out-of-it dweebs just don’t get me.”
The Monkees overcame the early groans as TV’s Beatle knock off very quickly because they proved to be so full of fun, so nice, and their songs so positive and appealing that even the hard core embraced them.
You are right about how quickly and easily they became the background music for so much of daily life.
I have been a fan since shortly after they started, and I still enjoy their music.
Check the discography and you'll be suprised at some of the names you'll find getting writing credits.
All the same, I also loved the Monkees. They were one of a kind.
Prayers up for Mr. Tork's speedy and complete recovery.

The Sir Douglas Quintet was also a “Beatle knockoff” (it was a formulated attempt to get an American band on the charts in the midst of the British Invasion).
Just about everything rock and roll was a Beatle knockoff in those days.
And there are those who decry the Monkees because they did not (initially) play their instruments or (initially) write their own songs. Sounds like the Motown “Hit Machine” system to me.
