The cat was only trying to save itself. Cats and giraffes are selfish.

Most cats I know would watch you be consumed by flames with complete indifference, lick their fur for a bit, and then curl up to sleep on your warm ashes.

Yeah I was thinking the same. The cat just needed her to open the door.

Wow - I had a similar experience years ago, except it was just a malfunctioning alarm, there was no fire. But I was so exhausted from working on my house all day that I woke up a little, thought, "oh, it's a siren," and went back to sleep.
Suddenly I had two cats on my chest, meowing and pawing at my face. Then I did wake up to quite a scare.
I don't think they were trying to save my life as much as say, "TURN THAT DAMN THING OFF!"

We had a major house fire about two years ago.
Our magnificent, noble young hero dog, with his superb nose and acute hearing, kept snoring until I woke him up and carried him out of the house. I really wanted to be able to tell the story of how this glorious animal saved our lives, but No. He was useless. That's okay; we love him anyway.

Yeah, that "appears" all sweet and good etc. But instead of following the easy angle of the cat heroically waking its owner to save her life, has anyone considered that its more likely that the cat realized that the only one that knew how to open the door was that person thing on the bed?
Smart cat does not necessarily equal heroic cat.

“the cat’s name was not immediately available”
T. S. Eliot said a cat has three names:
(1) the name people call the cat;
(2) the name other cats call the cat;
(3) the name the cat calls himself.

Turns out an ordinary housecat is far more qualified than our president. At least the cat accomplished something.

Years ago I came home to a burning house. I ran in and carried out an 80 pound fish tank. It took four men to carry it back in. I RESCURED A STUPID TANK OF FISH!!! From a fire!! They didn’t even have a pump so unless the temp got really really hot, the fish were going to be okay.

The naming of cats is a serious matter.
It isn’t just one of your holiday games.
In fact, you might think me as mad as a hatter,
when I tell you a cat must have three separate names.
