Chris Isaak, 'Mr. Lucky' (new CD)
Boston Globe ^ | 2/23/09 | Sarah Rodman

Posted on 03/04/2009 12:56:36 PM PST by pissant

Nobody cries like dreamboat crooner Chris Isaak does. In fact, he's got a song on his new album called "You Don't Cry Like I Do." The man has either had the worst run of bad relationships ever or just wisely recognizes that the hitch in his throat and his butter-melting falsetto work best when he's pining, lamenting, beseeching, or otherwise bringing the high, Orbison-ian drama. Either way, he continues to deliver the goods on "Lucky" by singing about the unlucky. Among the cast of lonely hearts are the bitterly betrayed man doing the slow burn on "Cheater's Town" and the remorseful heartbreaker who knows "it's easy to say what you want to believe" on the lovely, melancholy "We Let Her Down." Even the happy shouter of the rollicking "Mr. Lonely Man" is wondering how he can dry his tears and get the girl back. A couple of gifted ladies - Trisha Yearwood and Michelle Branch - show up to offer sweet harmonies and more Kleenex. Isaak's effervescent side pokes through as well from the swaggering galoot taking a bite out of the "Big Wide Wonderful World" to the optimist ambling through the New Orleans-flavored jaunt "We've Got Tomorrow." Broken or healed, Isaak, whose new Biography Channel series debuts this Thursday, doesn't need luck - he's got talent. (Out tomorrow.)

Bob Dylan’s got a new album coming out in April. He can’t sing. I’ll buy it though....

Yup. Roy really had the lost love with the falsetto down. Issak has a real original sound. Good stuff.

I really love “In Dreams” by Roy. I am not a huge Orbison guy but he really grew on me over the recent years.

Yep. Still a Dylan fan too. My wife is the bigger Chris Isaak fan than I am, but he’s one talented feller.

Isaak obviously was influenced by the Orb. The yearning heartbroken wail is still in fashion.

Roy’s stuff was very underrated. “In Dreams” has that Tex Mex part which almost sounds like a mariatchi band.

I hate chick signers where it is just wail and bitching. Just awful.

The one song where the girl is screaming “it’s not fair ..something something.. the cross I have to bear.”

Bobby more or less openly supported Obama for Prez . He isn’t getting any of my money . The smart musicians were the ones who kept their traps shut during the election .

Read this excellent review of a Chris Isaak concert. Excerpt:
Isaak does the sullen, lonely guy thing on records, but he has never been able to resist zany antics and goofy humor onstage, almost like an instant antidote to the moody melancholy of his spare, often haunting rock exotica. He acts like a shy, sensitive, bruised lover, but would anyone really that shy wear a suit made of tiny mirrors?

Also, check out the recent instrumental album El Dorado by Chris' first guitarist Jimmy Wilsey.

Worst run of relationships, Dion: “Teenager in Love”, “No One Knows”, “Where or When”, “Lonely Teenager”, “Runaround Sue”, “Drip Drop”, “Little Diane”.

Saw him in concert last summer at the Chateau St. Wichelle winery ampitheatre. Great performer.

I’ve heard it both ways but nobody seems to know for sure! Typical Dylan.

Well Pissant, we agree on TWO things (at least!) now, we both are solidly behind Duncan Hunter, and it looks like we both are avid Chris Isaak fans, lol

I always liked Isaak, but what sold me was that scorchin’ “Baby did a Bad Bad Thing”, that was hard core rockin’ blues, and I was sorry to see his short-lived TV series get canceled but hey, he’s a musician not a prime time actor (although he can act).

I’ve often thought that Isaak and the group BR-549 could put out some monstrous tunes, if you’ve never heard BR’s tune “18 Wheels and a Crowbar”, take a listen sometime and imagine Chris Isaak doing the lead vocals, it would ROCK (and it’s already a fantastic little tune).

I’ll have to check out ‘Mr Lucky’, thanks for the post!

Now if we could just get Chris Isaak to come out in support of Duncan Hunter for President...

No exactly a rousing endorsement!

Bob Dylan was NEVER a political activist!!! He wrote many songs that others sang, some he sang, but he WAS NEVER actively involved in any political movement. Ask Joan Baez, it was ONE of her greatest regrets!! She has ALWAYS and still does think highly of him, but tried for years and years to get him involved! She’s said Dylan always said “it was only about the music”.

I’d like to hear Dylan come out and plainly say he thinks Obama is his man. I’m not gonna hold my breath, BUT, if he does I’ll certainly have to re-evaluate my opinion of him.....

I realize that Dylan was never a political activist or involved in any movement . I’ve read his book and have the NO DIRECTION home DVD , etc...which was why I was surprised to read in a variety of places that he was for Obama . I’ll have to do a little more research on this .
