Maybe it’ll make the lucky recipient able to survive the Obama era.

I’d take the lump sum option, myself.

Only until about April; the Obamassiah will make sure and make that payout "fair"! The winner will get to keep a "fair" $45,000 and the rest will be shared for the good of all society!

WTF? Collecting free money from the government is now called "earning"?

take the lump sum. You can make more from taking the lump sum and put it into the bank and earn interest than 8 million over 27 years

What about an exclusive zone, an industrial base, then a private army, and finally territorial accession?

By the time they get done taxing it...$212.

Kidding aside... I've run the numbers on this before (because I'm a math geek at heart), and the cash option, after taxes (using MD taxes as a reference, since that's where I live) is approximately 45% of the "jackpot" (annuity) value.

That'd be a cool 95 million or so in this case. Even if you just want to "splurge" with 15 million, the remaining 80 million at a conservative 4% return nets $3.2 million in pre-tax income a year ($4.0 million at 5%).

I'm pretty sure I could live on that meager income.

It's a lottery. Not the govt.

I could win something like that but 212 million people would also have the same number. Under Obama I would owe two dollars tax on that $1.

Isn’t NJ flirting with some surtax on millionaires? Over and above the other taxes? If so, the winner had better beat feet.

That would be about $4 million or so a year after taxes.

To paraphrase comedian Louis CK, that means you could blow 3 million, and still have a million left.

A lottery run by the government of NJ.
