If there were a Conservative party, I don’t think it ought to run a separate candidate for all races, which would split conservative votes and elect more Democrats. In races where the Republican candidate is awful, such as Maine (Senators Snowe and Collins), it ought to nominate its own candidate, and in places where the Republican incumbent is reasonable, it should endorse the incumbent.

That's sounds like a promising method to me. Of course I know next to nothing about politics, other than it appears if you're a dem you don't pay taxes.
