Wolves in Russia are usually hunted only with massive manpower, or from an aircraft. The traditions of wolf hunts go back for a couple of centuries, once first muzzleloaders became widely available (from Peter the Great's factories, for example, around 1700.)

A lone hunter typically stands no chance against a pack of wolves, and wolves love to attack in numbers. Elevated stands help somewhat, but wolves are not stupid. Because of that driving is the usual method, first circling the area with flags. Tens of people (and dogs) must be involved, if not a hundred, with at least 10-20 hunters posted across the exit zone. It's hard to organize such a hunt when people are busy at work all day long; but in 1800s peasants had nothing to do in winter, and that's when hunts like that were popular.
