To: Daffynition

I am on the Maine coast. Last year some young entrepreneurs decided to make some lobster money the easy way. Just row into a lobster pound at night ( a pound is a pond that they keep their catch ) and steal all you want. It worked..for a while. What these geniuses did not think of is this is a small community. We know everybody. Sure enough, a sternman and his friend were caught. ( a sternman is the guy who hauls the traps, sorts, reloads and launches ).

Very satisfying scene in John Casey's Spartina where he catches someone stealing his lobsters and lights into their plastic cruiser with a claw hammer.

Ahhh - mmm - and?

There’s a ‘law of the sea’ up here regarding poaching other fisherman’s catch/pots...and it usually ain’t pretty.

ARe you leaving something out? ;o)
