The first family dog saga is almost over. Michelle Obama, who is on the cover of People again, told the magazine that her daughters Sasha and Malia will get their promised pooch in April, after spring break, and they are looking for a Portuguese Water Dog to adopt from a shelter. "Temperamentally they're supposed to be pretty good," Obama says in the issue hitting newsstands on Friday. "From the size perspective, they're sort of middle of the road -- it's not small, but it's not a huge dog. And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that's where we're leaning." During the campaign, President Obama promised his girls the dog at the end -- and it became a subject of much speculation and lobbying by advocates of various breeds. There was early talk that the Obamas would get a labradoodle. The first couple and their daughters have been going back and forth on possible names, and Michelle Obama told People she nixed "Frank" or "Moose."

I didn’t think Muslims were allowed to keep dogs??? Who knew. Taqiyya????
Since acquiring this dog is for publicity, maybe they could name the dog, “Prop”.
That’s the first thing I thought when I read the headline. I’m sure there are just tons of PWDs at animal shelters all across the country./s They’ve already picked one from an Obamamite PWD breeder and the dog will be ‘found’ by a cooperative shelter just in time.
Good God, get a damn dog already.
It was “temperamentally”, not temporarily.
OK
I think that was my grandmother’s dog. I swear.
I definitely don’t blame the dog; I feel frickin’ sorry for the pet. Gorgeous animals in that photo!
I’m in love.:)
Mine’s a black-wavy. He has a small white flash on his chest, a white toe on his left rear paw, and a very cool white “soul patch”. Way too smart for his own good!
He came from a breeder in Western Michigan (I live in central PA). I’d have been on a loooong waiting list for a puppy if I didn’t already know one of her previous customers. I came with a built-in recommendation. But that gives you an idea as to what lengths you have to go to get a PWD.
The Obama-kids should have stuck with the Labradoodle plan. The puppy mills are churning them out like counterfeit $100 bills.
I agree about Greyhounds being great adopt dogs.
I am thinking soley on what I have been told by a few who have greyhound ex racers are dogs who like to lounge around alot.
So my question to you is is a retired Greyhound a good match for two energetic young girls who want to play with doggie?
Back to Obama getting his kids a dog....I like the fact that the girls are getting a pooch but the idea of letting that pooch around Barry creeps me out.
I have this weird gut feeling that he is not a dog freindly person and if no one was looking he would be the type to kick a dog.
Thank God the USSS will be around to protect the new First Dog.
So, how many Portuguese water dogs do you suppose end up in shelters?
I'm sure will miraculously appear at a shelter.
