A middle school in Southern California is spending $10,000 a year to teach Advanced Placement Spanish to 35 of its 650 students -- and all but one of them are already fluent in Spanish.
Thirty-four of the kids in the AP class are from Mexico or are the children of Mexican immigrants. They all grew up speaking Spanish at home.
The program -- the only one of its kind in California -- has outraged some critics who say they are concerned that the AP course wastes public resources including taxpayer dollars to teach native Spanish speakers how to speak their native language in an American public school.

Sorry. You said 10 billion.
1K = 1 thousand.
1M = 1 million.
1G = 1 billion.
There is some confusion between computers and money, but if you want to say "$10,000" it's probably best to spell it out as "10 Grand". To a computer geek like me 10G = 10 billion.

I guess we should also put an end to AP english
since the majority of students already speak English? The Troll has a point.

When my high school in Canada started offering Spanish, the South/Central American immigrant kids took it thinking they’d have an easy class. They did poorly, and always argued with the teacher. We of course were being taught Castillian, not Mexican.

Lord, I can only imagine how mad you would be if AP Farsi was being taught to 35 Iranian immigrant children... I bet your head would explode... the irony.

I took 3 years of Spanish is publik skool. Does that count? I can’t remember any of it but oh well. When my children are in jr high , I will be learning Spanish with them. We will be using Rosetta Stone. I previewed it last year and it was incredible. My English is constanly being refined as I teach it on a daily basis. Maybe you should refine your manners.
