I own one of these chairs. The gas cylinder eventually lost all its pressure. The chair absorbs your weight as you take your seat.
I can understand how one of those would be over-pressured if one were to drop suddenly onto the seat. (Or if someone who was overweight had previously damaged the base of the seat.)
I have no trouble with the basics of this story.
