Pretty much every country and culture has practiced slavery. However, it is interesting that ONLY the United States is raked over the coals for it, and for the record it practiced slavery for only 70 years of its entire existence. Contrast that with the duration of slavery in other countries and cultures; you will find that the United States’ experience with slavery was a drop in the bucket when measured against others.

Excerpt -

The most famous of the Zanzibar traders was Tippu Tib, a respected Swahili and close confidante of Sultan Majid bin Said. It was he who was largely responsible for the extension of the Sultan’s sphere of influence. Whilst the Sultan managed affairs in Zanzibar, ensuring its security and defending Arab interests from especially British interference, Tippu Tib created a vast empire. Ultimately Said’s African dominions covered a staggering two million square kilometres and it was famously said that “when the flute plays in Zanzibar, the whole of Africa dances”. Many of the native tribes that had been in league with the Arabs for centuries were by now well-armed and Said considered his hold on the continent and the trade to be impregnable.

Following the death of Said, Tippu continued to work the interior on behalf of his successors. Increasingly though he seems to have been working more for his own personal interests than those of the Sultan. He built himself an empire around the upper Congo, with headquarters at Stanley Falls, where he ruled like a great chief and when American explorer Henry Morton Stanley was attempting his crossing of the continent, it was with Tippu that he had to negotiate his passage.

During this period, the Sultan of Zanzibar also controlled a substantial portion of the east African coast, known as Zanj, including Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, and trading routes extended much further into Africa, such as to Kindu on the Congo river. In November 1886, a German-British border commission established the Zanj as a ten-nautical mile (19 km) wide strip along the coast from Cape Delgado (now in Mozambique) to Kipini (now in Kenya) including all offshore islands and several towns in what is now Somalia. However, from 1887 to 1892, all of these mainland possessions were subsequently lost to the colonial powers of Britain, Germany, and Italy although some were not formally sold or ceded until the 20th century (Mogadishu to Italy in 1905 and Mombasa to Kenya in 1963).

Sadly, just more irony swirling around with this pres—he may not even be eligible to be pres (so many lawyers to fight releasing records), he is not first black president (he is half white and arab/african) and he is not the great reparations/liberator-both of his great grandparents were likely involved in slave trade. Ironically, many (perhaps most) Americans’ ancestors were not involved in slave trade, yet they are being called cowards, racists etc. Just really ironic to me.

EXCERPT:

The Era of White Guilt is over.

This seemingly impossible event occurred because the vast majority of white Americans didn’t give a fluff about skin color and enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man. Not just any black man. A very liberal black man who spent his early career race-hustling banks, praying in a racist church for 20 years, and actively working with America-hating domestic terrorists. Yet white Americans made Barack Obama their leader. Therefore, as of Nov. 4, 2008, white guilt is dead.

I’m afraid I still don’t get your point.

We can all agree there were Arab-African Muslim guys running around East and Central Africa during the 19th century doing bad things.

AFAIK, nobody has posted any proof whatsoever that Obama is descended genetically from these guys. Obama Senior looks sterotypically East African in his photos. Not Arab or Semitic at all. Obama Junior looks more mixed, but that’s not surprising since 1/2 his bloodline is from Europe.

Obama Senior was raised Muslim, despite the fact that a significant majority of the Luo tribe is Christian. (Well, sort of.) There are credible claims he was an atheist as an adult.

OS was raised Muslim because HIS father had converted as an adult to Islam from Roman Catholicism, not because the family was ancestrally Muslim.

I have yet to see anything whatsoever other than innuendo linking our Obama’s family line to Arab slavers or a history of Muslim beliefs extending back beyond his grandfather. His extended family seems to mostly be Catholic.

I see no reason why the religion or occupation of President Obama’s great-great-grandfather and more distant ancestors should be of particular significance to any American. I thought we gave up all that guilt or authority by descent nonsense when we became Americans.

Whether Obama was born in HI or not is highly relevant to whether he is eligible under the Constitution to serve as President. Whether (some of) his ancestors worked for Tippu Tib or came from Oman rather than Sudan is as irrelevant as anything I can imagine.

IOW, so what?

Then he decided to be called Barack Hussein Obama, his original birth name.

Has that been confirmed? And when did he start and stop using the name Barry Soetero?

the vast majority of white Americans ... enthusiastically pulled the voting lever for a black man

Obama got 43% of the white vote. http://www.slate.com/id/2204251/

That's not even a majority, much less a "vast majority."

I'm an Australian. ALL I am trying to point out is that there WAS/IS a certain advantage to being able to CLAIM ARAB ancestry in the region. To be negro was to be the underclass, considered only useful as slaves by the arab overlords. WE may have given up 'all that guilt or authority by decent nonsense' but you cannot speak for Kenya, where as recently as January 2008 Raila Odinga who describes himself as Luo and Christian, promised the muslims he would institute sharia law if the muslims voted for him.

I'm bringing up some history of slavery in the region only to show that arabs 'intermarried' and being able to claim arab ancestry provided an advantage - and making the suggestion that PERHAPS Barack Hussein Obama Snr IF he was in any way connected with the registration of the birth of his son, MAY have stated his RACE as ARAB-AFRICAN.

As for Tippu Tib, he is a good example:

His mother, Bint Habib bin Bushir, was a Muscat Arab of the ruling class. His father and paternal grandfather were coastal Swahili who had taken part in the earliest trading expeditions to the interior. His paternal great-grandmother, wife of Rajab bin Mohammed bin Said el Murgebi was the daughter of Juma bin Mohammed el Nebhani, a member of a respected Muscat (Oman) family, and an African woman from the village of Mbwa Maji, a small village south of the then German capital of Dar es Salaam.

So tell me, how might Tippu Tib have described himself under similar circumstances?

Maybe when he obtained a drivers licence in 1996?

Not bloodly likely. Tippu Tib was born in 1837. You're talking here about his ancestors. I lose track of how many greats, but we're at least back in the 1700s somewhere.

Germany established its colony in the area after 1885.

I accept your explanation. There appears to be some reason Obama is anxious not to let his original birth cert get out, and your reason is as logical as any I've seen, and more so than most.
