Pelosi says US has duty to 'lead the way' to recovery

The United States is aware of its duty to "lead the way" to recovery from the financial and economic crisis sweeping the world, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in Rome.

"I bring the commitment of the United States that as we work to strengthen our own economy, we do so understanding our responsibility (in) leading the way for the worldwide economy to progress and to improve," Pelosi told reporters.

Pelosi... said her weeklong visit to Italy had been "transforming" in demonstrating how Rome and the United States "can work together on the issues that challenge the whole world."

Berlusconi, for his part, said: "I think we can emerge from this crisis by working together."

Echoing declarations at the just-ended Group of Seven finance ministers' meeting in Rome, Berlusconi added: "We must write new financial rules and never fall into the trap of protectionism."

The United States is among the countries that has prompted concern over protectionism due to a "Buy American" clause in a 787 billion dollar (626 billion euro) stimulus package, passed by lawmakers late last Friday with the sensitive clause toned down.

US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner vowed here on Saturday that the United States, the world's biggest economy and the source of much of the financial drama in recent months, would work with other nations for a consensus on reforms.

Pelosi will have an audience with Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday, likely after the pontiff's weekly general audience, according to a Vatican official.

The House speaker, who describes herself as an "ardent" Catholic while advocating reproductive rights, will be the highest-ranking US official to see the pope since President Barack Obama took office last month.

The new Democratic administration is at odds with the Vatican over abortion, stemcell research and other bio-ethical issues. ...

Pelosi had to get a vote on the stimulus bill before anyone got to read it because she had to go get an award in Italy and, being the good Catholic girl she is, drop by and see the Pope.

The first thing we need to do is stop losing those 500 million jobs a month in the U.S., right Nancy?

“ROFLMAO — Her botox must have gone to the brain”

Diva Nancy on her European stupidity tour.

CEOs can’t fly their corporate jets, but its OK for Comrade Pelosi to tour on the taxpayers dime. Snort.

We do.

But a spending bill will not accomplish this.

They will be back in a few months with a stimulus bill.

During the Middle Ages the Popes were often quite political, entertaining sinister despots who even sought their destruction. I am not Catholic, but I suspect the Pope did not want to alienate the “functional” POTUS anymore than he would Putin.
