visited the lab at the former Naval Base about 5 years ago where the sub is located and research is being done-fascinating stuff.
To: mrmargaritaville
I visited there a couple of times myself and very interesting stuff. That was one tiny ride. 6'3/260 me wouldn't have a prayer of beginning to fit in the hatch.

I guess the only consolation might be that people were smaller back then. But I’d agree with you, after seeing how small that thing was I can’t imagine anyone over 5’6” fitting in it.

There are said to be some lost Confederate Subs in Mobile Bay and in the Red River. The One in Mobile Bay may have sunk a Union Ironclad before she herself sank. Lots of Lost History out there waiting to be found.
To: mrmargaritaville
I bet 5'6 or so was probably pushing it.

Historians also know the Hunley needed to wait for the incoming tide to return to shore.
Were they waiting down there and miscalculated their oxygen and blacked out? said McConnell.”
Bingo! This answers all the mysteries of crew in place without signs of panic, etc.

"There are said to be some lost Confederate Subs in Mobile Bay and in the Red River." At least one more in the bay, maybe two.

Read Union and Confederate Submarine warfare in the Civil War By Mark Ragan 1999. he lists the CSS Captain Pierce as the sub that sank the USS Tecumseh at the Battle of Mobile Bay Aug. 5, 1864. Up to five subs were built at Shreveport, LA one of them was sent by rail to Houston, Tx.

I visited too, a couple of years ago. I thought the story of the captain's “lucky” gold piece was fascinating.
