Several years ago there was a push to outlaw horse-drawn carriage rides in Washington DC on grounds that it was inhumane to make the horses pull such heavy carriages. Friends of mine who owned such a carriage-driving business unhitched the horses from the carriage and pulled the carriage to Capitol Hill themselves, to show how easy it was for a well-cared-for 1200-pound horse to do.

I worked for Chateau Stables in NYC for a number of years in the 1970's. The horses were very well cared for.
