How do you know the child isn’t in danger? The father is alleged to have committed an act of violence against the mother. How do you know for sure what he will or will not do to the child?

He had visitation rights. If he had ever been deemed dangerous to the child, I would assume that the court would not have granted him those rights. Parents who want but don't have full custody snatch their children all the time. 99% of those times, the child is not in danger.

And just to let you know in case you didn't already, the link cited in the main post now reports that the man turned the kid in to a relative, who called police, so the kid is safe now, either way.
