We had an ‘Ugly Betty,” at a coal mine where i worked. It was a Cat DW-21 motor scraper.
Of course, TV audiences don't want to actually watch real ugly people. There is a subconscious reaction to appearance that will either keep people looking or turn them away. If the actors where truly ugly, say, Helen Thomas ugly, they wouldn't watch.
I agree. Much like the girl from the Harry Potter books was supposed to be homley, but was played by a pretty girl in the movies.
I always thought that was the heart of the gag. The Ugly Bettys were supposed to be seen as actually beauties—they just needed a makeover and a wardrobe change.
I get a kick that the Chinese version, Wu Di, claims to have gained twenty pound for the role and gotten a tan. I sure as hell can’t see the extra twenty and the tan is not so noticeable.
It seems the Chinese viewing public is the only one not to go along with the gag.
Interesting that in China having a tan is still declasse.
Of course, before Coco Chanel made it fashionable in the 1920’s, having a tan universally meant that you were a peasant fieldworker and ladies worldwide carried parasols.
When the lights are out, all cats are grey
I don’t know ... she looks kinda like Miley Cyrus ... ;o)
Its ok. She is just lip-synching to the real ugly Betty hidden behind the red curtain.
