Kiffin not really clear on what constitutes recruiting violation
National Post ^ | February 05, 2009 | Noah Love

It has not taken long for hostilities between new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin and Florida to heat up.

While addressing the Volunteers’ 2009 recruiting class during an alumni breakfast on Thursday, Kiffin threw down the gauntlet, accusing Gators coach Urban Meyer of a recruiting violation.

The comment resulted in the Southeastern Conference issuing Kiffin a public reprimand.

“Coach Kiffin has violated the Southeastern Conference code of ethics,” commissioner Mike Slive said. “SEC Bylaw 10.5.1 clearly states that coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players.”

Kiffin charged that Meyer broke a rule in the recruitment of Nu’Keese Richardson, a wide receiver from Florida who committed to the defending national champion Gators but signed with Tennessee.

“Just so you know, when a recruit is on another campus, you can’t call him. I love the fact that Urban had to cheat and still didn’t get him.” (Kiffin said)

Florida quickly responded to the accusation with athletic director Jeremy Foley blasting Kiffin for making it.

“His allegations are inappropriate, out of line and, most importantly, totally false,” Foley said. “The appropriate action at this time in my opinion is for coach Kiffin to make a public apology.”

The SEC backed Foley, confirming that the phone call in question did not violate SEC or NCAA recruiting rules.

“We expect our coaches to have an understanding and knowledge of conference and NCAA rules,” Slive said.

Good. I'm glad Kiffy said this. My GATORS might need a little motivation to get up for the weak-a$$ed Vols this year? Nah, we've got Tebow.

The Vols are always accusing the GATORS of some impropriety or another. No biggie.

This was my first national signing day that I followed online. wow...quite an ordeal!!

Kiffykins, as I've come to know him as, really stepped in it IMHO. He might want to think about saving some of that so called 'swaggah' for the playing field...just an idea.

Lance Thompson did some big talkin' yesterday as well... something about having Memphis wrapped up?? I hear it differently... (WR Keiwone Malone, 2010 Class commit to the Crimson Tide happens to be from Memphis)

Time for more popcorn. :)

Does Tennessee play at Florida next season? If so circle that game on your calendar.

Mr. Nu'keese is going to get "reacquainted" with Major Wright on that day.

I agree, Tebow won't need motivation, he'll BE the motivation! I'm pretty sure my guys in Crimson will have much the same motivation!

Welcome to the SEC Kiffykins. :) Roll TIDE ROLL!

In almost all cases I root for the other SEC teams in any inter-conference game. I make an exception for Tennessee.

The SEC West is going to be tough this year. I see Ole Miss and Mississippi State being tough, along with LSU and Bama of course. Arkansas should be better as well, and of course you can’t write off Auburn either. But the Gators should pretty much dominate the East this year.

Here lately I've tried really hard to feel that way about Auburn with the way the wheels kinda fell off everything for them over there. It's hard to not want to see them do well. It's no fun if it's not challenging. lol Tho I wouldn't mind not having the Tebow challenge when we play ya'll!

As far as Tenn goes, nope. Maybe a smidgen of good feeling IF they were the only SEC team going for a national title... but it looks like that's NOT going to be an issue for a while.

All the SEC East teams play each other every year.

I understand. The same is true for the Big East but my question is TN at FL this season or FL at TN?

I hope I'm not at a UConn game at the same time that game is played.

We’ve got a columnist down here, Finnebaum, who had a column last week on the absolute insanity of hiring this kid - he started the column off by talking about how most people think Al Davis is a little nuts these days; he ended it by saying that maybe Al Davis isn’t nuts after all - he got rid of this yoyo! Roll Tide

Looks like it's already rubbed off on the Lady Gators. Only their third win ever over the Lady Vols.
