You can boot up the computer independent of anything on its hard drive with a
live Linux CD. It lets you access the hard drive without having to use anything that's on C:. Save all the data you want on some memory sticks and then reinstall Windows. A different trick I used to clean up a Windows computer was to go in safe mode then erase every single file that was created on the day of the infection.
