John Madden has forgotten more about football, than the writer will ever know about it.

He’s a little goofy, but he doesn’t seem to show a bias of one team over another like a lot of the other sportscasters. Sometimes I have to turn off the sound it gets so gushy.

I take it you never heard him announce a game that Brett Favre was playing in.

I love Madden for being the guy that cared about the trenches. When he came in as a commentator the league was going passwhacky, and the same fondness for the vertical game that was infecting coaches was also infecting the booth. Other commentators could go whole games without mentioning anybody that wasn't a QB or WR, they called games like they were 7 on 7 scrimmages. Madden would point out the blocking that made that pass possible, he talked about the big guys with the small paychecks. Being a fan of the 3 yards and a cloud of dust 70s style of football Madden was a breath of fresh air, an announcer that actually talked about FOOTBALL.

Now he's old and decrepit, and probably senile, but I still love him. He saved the game for me. And has contributed a lot. Not just telestrators, but the score bar that's now in all sports was a Madden suggestion when Fox snagged the NFC contract, plus teaching commentators that there are 22 guys on the field and they all contribute.

Madden’s the best for insightful analysis. He does a decent game call. Not stellar, but good. He knows the game and he knows the personnel, so I like him best for commentary and analysis.

I only watch Charger games, for the most part. I said Madden “seemed” pretty fair, compared to the other nitwits they have. I’m sorry to hear he has put you through such football hell, though. : )

Madden couldn't quit if he wanted to, he needs to keep the video game sales going. That's got to be where he makes some serious money.

It is certainly understandable that he is not the same at 72. For one thing, he has been away from the coaching for decades now, and it would take an incredible amount of time to stay up with all the developments in the game. Still, he does better than almost all of the other guys, especially dorks like Dierdorf. I'll take Madden any day, and when he's wrong, I'll yell at the TV, but not as often.

Nope, can’t say that I have.

When I think about it, I don't know that there's *any* NFL announcers I like.

Man law. No one named “Matthew Futterman” should be allowed to comment on football.

Yuck. I'm glad someone else saw that in Madden.

I remember a playoff game maybe 4-5 years ago when Favre was running towards the end zone, saw he wasn't going to make it & threw an absolutely stupid, underhand pass that bounced off a defender's chest in/near the end zone. Stupid, stupid throw that should have been intercepted & would have gotten a rookie benched.

Madden was practically wetting himself, raving about how much Favre likes to play the game, how much fun he has, etc. Uh, John - didn't you see that last play?

This being one example of many Madden broadcasts.

Many of those among the 14 play on prescription turf instead of the old artificial turf. This is a mixture of synthetic and real grass, with a dirt base. So in cases like the Giants, Seahawks or Texans, teams can end up with muddy jerseys.

Anybody, anybody, is better than this putz.

Kornheiser is a complete asshat moron who can’t write a decent sports column, let alone report or announce sporting events.

He needs to stop stealing money from his various and sundry employers.

Its the last time John Madden will be broadcasting.

I didn't know that, I will miss him. I have always enjoyed his down to earth style and the respect he always gives to and gets from players, managers and fellow broadcasters.

He doesn't try to throw out hundred dollar words or "wax eloquently" (whatever that means).

In my opinion, the most obnoxious and arrogant hack out there is Chris Collinsworth. Whenever he is on, I turn the channel........

But back to Madden, I just enjoy listening to him. Kinda like listening to your favorite grandfather talk about things. And if he errs in some of the facts he gives, I wouldn't know it unless somebody told me........and who cares.

Collinsworth’s a blowhard. I’ll always think favorably of him because of his connection with Cincy and the Bengals...but his predictions related to who will win what game, or division, are almost always wrong.

This year’s most famous ‘Collinsworth’ was his proclamation that Donovan McNabb was ‘done’ in Philadelphia, and that he wouldn’t step on the field as the quarterback for that team again, and would be out of Philly in the off season, along with Andy Reid.

he just can’t help himself....(chuckle)

All that aside, I’ve met him a few times, very nice guy, always willing to make time for fans of the NFL. I also met his wife a few times, long before they began dating while she was working as an attorney in Cincy. Smart, pretty, down to earth, Cris married well indeed.

That was pretty effing stupid on his part. They replayed that great game the other night and Brady was solid as a rock on that final drive.
