Word For The Day, Thursday, January 29, 2009 - cynosure
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 29 January 2009 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cynosure • \SYE-nuh-shur\ • noun
1 : the northern constellation Ursa Minor; also : North Star
2 : one that serves to direct or guide
3 : a center of attraction or attention

Example sentence:
The young actress's natural beauty and graceful charm made her a cynosure wherever she went.

Etymology:
Ancient mariners noted that all the stars in the heavens seem to revolve around a particular star, and they relied on it to guide their navigation. The constellation that this bright star appears in is known to English speakers today as Ursa Minor, or the Little Dipper, but the Ancient Greeks called it Kynosoura, a term that comes from a phrase meaning "dog's tail." "Kynosoura" passed into Latin and Middle French, becoming "cynosure." When English speakers adopted the term in the mid-16th century, they used it as a name for the constellation and the star (which is also known as the North Star) and also to identify a guide of any kind. By the early 17th century, "cynosure" was also being used figuratively for anything or anyone that, like the North Star, was the focus of attention or observation.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I laughed until I hurt when 41 talked about that Ugly woman with the sign that said “Stay out of my womb.” They way he deapanned “Don’t worry lady...”

Bubba was pretty quick about how 41 could get away with it, but not him. The worm joke was good, but 41 stole the show.

Actually Bill couldn’t tell that joke because no one would believe that he’d turn down even an ugly woman.

It was so gray and overcast yesterday it was hard to believe the thermostat. But then the wind and rain came, about 5ish and the temp plummeted over 20degrees in less than an hour.

The wind “event” was such that a retail center under construction not far over the state line from us was demolished.

Cynosure: Now you’re tossing the easy ones at us! But just to be sure I asked Harold, who is a notary public and put a pacemaker in his cat.

Cynosure is when you cyn your name and someone like Harold sings his too just to be sure, and dates it.

In a sentence: “Akmud, My grandmother’s cynosure is always printed on her SS checks”.

don’t think it’s a propery grab scam by the Vatican. The Catholic Church is the largest, isn’t it? i would assume they would have more lawyers.

I think you misunderstood my comment. The big complaints about the liberals is that they can keep the property and the traditional Anglicans are kicked to the curb. So if they had a few more lawyers, they might stand a better chance of keeping the property they originally purchased.

i think it’s only fair if we can send the NONtraditional anglicans our leftwingers, who insist on trying to ordain women and otherwise muck things up. you can always tell who they are in Mass, because they will try to ALTER the prayers by saying alternative words in a LOUD voice. there were two guys behind us at Mass on Sunday who set my gaydar a’clanging. Sure enough, while they didn’t NOT say for us MEN and our salvation [the wingnuts are SILENT for the men and just say US] he did say “became FLESH” instead of became man. my eyes rolled out of my skull. it is irksome when people scream out the responses like they are group leaders or something anyway, let alone someone who is doing so while materially altering the prayers!
