The Covenant School fired its girls basketball coach Sunday, the same day he posted a message on a youth basketball Web site saying he disagreed with school officials who had publicly apologized for the team's 100-0 victory over Dallas Academy. In reporting the firing, Kyle Queal, Covenant's head of school, emphasized that former coach Micah Grimes "now only represents himself" when discussing the game, which has become a national talking point. Queal said he could not say whether the firing was a direct result of the posting and declined to answer any questions.

He should be fired......

He got fired because he publicly questioned the school's administration for their apology. Any coach who publicly goes against his school's administration will usually get fired PDQ.

We should stop keeping score at all sporting events in this country and give all teams trophies and ‘Partipant Ribbons’. We surely don’t want someone getting their feelings hurt because they are inferior. I say we start with the big game this Sunday.

If Dallas Academy didn't want to get beat 100-0 they should have scheduled a home and home with the Mavericks.

Unfortuately, the four corners would have led to a “keep away” situation, with special needs kids chasing the ball fruitlessly as better taller plays tossed it away just as they were almost able to get the ball....uggggggggly as well....magritte

It is an insult to an opponent to pull your punches.

Ridiculous. I've been on both ends on the tennis court, and it's not fun at all to either run someone off the court or to get killed 0-0. Sports are supposed to be fun, particularly at the recreational level and the high school or middle school level. It doesn't do anyone any good to have one player standing around while the other fires aces past him. What does that accomplish?

Absolutely the correct decision, this guy’s an arse and has no business being around kids. Personally I want to know where the parents were of the kids on his team? I know if my kid was on a team that was engaging in that activity, I’d have walked right out on the court in the middle of the game, grabbed my kid, layed into the coach and walked out. Either that or told my kid to intentionally score for the other team to end this egomaniacs nonsense.

Where were you parents?

This coach taught his team nothing, he taught his opponents nothing, calling this bastard a coach at all is an insult to the term and title.

Agreed, that’s equally wrong, and those coaches too should have been canned.

I can see both sides of the story from the outset. But when you dig deeper you start seeing that the winning team was full court pressing and shooting threes well into the 4th quarter. That is what I have a problem with.

Sometimes you can’t stop scoring, but there is no reason to increase the tempo in the game by pressing, which would lead to quick baskets.

You can slow the game down, and the coach chose not to. And even after the fact, chose not to admit he made a mistake.

Your analysis is abolutely correct.

This guy doesn’t need to be a coach.

This is altogether the most wonderful expression of sportsmanship and sacrifice ever showered on a Texan plain. Eventually all Ecuadorians will pass through the Panama canal and see the truth of polar politics. Essentially good babble and the opposite converge into a white noise of humor. People in Illinois understand this and take banking seriously on Sunday. Maybe next Sunday too.

Here is part of the problem. When I was involved in HS sports, the coach would not have had to say anything, his kids would have done it themselves. If his kids don’t know enough to respect the other players, the coach needed to go.

The game was pressed because this egomaniac that called himself a coach got stars in his eyes and WANTED a 100 to Nothing win.. Complete and total arse, and a disgrace to true coaches everywhere.

Grace in winning and losing are tantamount things to teach kids, this guy is just ugly and ugly to the core.

When you completely outclass a team, there is nothing to be ashamed of, however to intentionally do what was done here, is inexcusable.

I actually agree with that decision, too. This was just a shameful display of sportsmanship that NOBODY should condone.

She said the parents of the team's eight players met with school officials Saturday and outlined three goals for the program: "

General Patton (”Americans love a winner) must be spinning in his grave. The Covenant team played by the rules and won. Yes, the margin of victory was excessive, but if you read the coach’s statement, he did everything he could to keep the score down—short of pulling his team off the floor.

He stopped the press after three minutes and began playing a zone. He began substituting freely and kept it up throughout the game. Covenant’s coach and players have nothing to apologize for.

On the other hand, someone might ask Dallas Academy why they still have a basketball team. Four seasons without a victory tells me that (a) they don’t have the talent base to field a team, or (b) they need a new coach.

As someone else observed, the Academy girls are not physically handicapped. There are plenty of athletes who’ve overcome ADD and dyslexia. Perhaps they need a new coach, and a new approach.

Here’s an idea. Maybe Dallas Academy ought to hire Coach Grimes. A few years ago, his program was in bad shape and he transformed it into a winner. He might be able to work a similar miracle with the team he spanked a couple of weeks ago.

This is more than the latest manifestation of Obamaerica. It’s a product of our touchy/feely approach to youth sports. Kids who were raised to expect a trophy after every soccer or tee ball game are suddenly shocked when they lose a basketball game by a staggering margin. And, we make the matter worse by transforming them into celebrities.
