Cold Hard Football Facts: Why Warner is better QB than Manning
SI ^ | 1/21/09 | Kerry Byrne

Kurt Warner did more than lift the historically dysfunctional Cardinals franchise into its first Super Bowl on Sunday. He also lifted himself past the Chosen One, Peyton Manning, to right behind Tom Brady on the list of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today.

His performance against Philly in the NFC title game was classic big-game Warner, the type we've rarely seen out of Manning in the playoffs. The Eagles entered the NFC title game with one of the league's best defenses: they ranked fourth in scoring (289 points allowed) and fifth in defensive passer rating (72.9).

It didn't matter.

Warner torched this stingy unit, completing 21 of 28 passes (75 percent) for 279 yards, 9.96 yards per attempt, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 145.7 passer rating.

It was a nearly perfect statistical game. In fact, over the course of the game, Warner jumped past Joe Montana and into second place on the all-time postseason passer rating list: Warner now boasts a 97.3 postseason passer rating; Montana, 95.6. Only the great Bart Starr was better in the playoffs (104.8).

From 2002 to 2006 Warner suffered a whole series of injuries, including to his throwing hand where he could not grip the ball well. He was healthy in 2007, and it showed. He was healthy this season, and he just SCORCHED 3 quality playoff teams in a row.

McNabb is a good player, but I don’t think he has what it takes to win the big game.. If Rush had not said those comments, McNabb would be playing elsewhere imho..

i agree. when warner is healthy he is one of the most accurate passers of all time and a great comeback story (twice!)

Agree, McNabb proved that yet again...and neither does Rex...that's why the Bears need someone else! :)

Rex lucked out cause of the Defense that year.. I think he is gone.. Right now our QB group is going to be Orton, Hanie, and whoever..

Compare this pic to the SI pic you posted. Notice anything?

Peyton doesn't needs his plays strapped to his wrist.

I also noticed Manning’s hands look huge in that photo. But having the plays on the wrist could be more of a crutch or security blanket for Warner.

At any rate, IMO manning is better, though i’d like to see the Cards win the SB. The steelers were already gifted a SB by the refs a couple of years ago.

Peyton doesn't need a crutch. Hell, he doesn't even use a huddle. The thing I like about him is his total professionalism. The networks cut over to him when he's sitting on the bench, and more times than not, he's on the phone, looking over photos of the last series, talking to Moore.

He runs his offense. At least next year he will be at camp, and play all the pre season games. He did a pretty good job coming off surgery and missing all that last year.

I agree. It’s the same reason I loved namath in SBIII. He went up against an awesome Colts defense and called 70% of the plays at the line of scrimmage.

Most of the time in the huddle he just told his team “check with me” and then went to the LOS to read the D.

Manning is in the same mold, but has stayed a lot healthier.

How much longer can PHL afford to keep McNabb? He can’t close the deal.

I get so tired of the constant comparisons. Kurt is a great QB, but if you want to compare, I doubt he’s actually better than Peyton Manning.

I’m pulling for Kurt and the team to win the SB. Sure hope it happens. But these sports writers would be better off not trying to compare all the players. It gets old.

If I have choice between Brent Farve or Kurt Warner, I would pick Kurt..

Get real. Brett Favre had no injuries, he always had to play with a mediocre OL and receiving core. He holds nearly all the QB records. Yeah he made boneheaded decisions and interceptions, but that's a plus, not a minus. That meant he wasn't afraid to take risks. Meanwhile Warner completely stunk from the Rams' SB loss to the Patriots in 2001 up until beginning of this season. He was ran out of St Louis in favor of Bulger and he was benched in AZ and only started because of injuries to the other QBs. Warner is nothing more than a Dave Kreig, a streaky, hot and cold QB. Is he Hall of Fame material? Yeah, he is I'll concede that.

I noticed one other thing. Warner is playing in the superbowl, after leading a very mediocre team. Peyton is couch surfing after squandering the juggernaut he played for.

I always see Peyton listening in to the helmut tranmitter. I don’t think Warner uses that ridiculous device.

Defense lost the overtime for the Colts. Otherwise, it’s very possible Peyton would be playing in the SB.

When the Iowa Barnstormers first came to town, the hubby and I immediately bought tickets.

We had the fun of watching Warner develop into a fantastic quarterback. I don't know if you've watched much Arena ball...it requires incredibly quick and accurate passing...I think it has really helped him in the NFL.

He seems like a great guy. I actually have a signed poster from his Arena League days (won it in a drawing)...maybe it will go up in value again...LOL!

"Unfortunately from 2002-2006 Warner was pretty bad. A nice run in one post season here isn't enough to erase those five seasons."

Manning has been to one Superbowl IIRC.....this is Kurt's THIRD one......one he won, one he barely won, and now this one, which I believe he will win....

Marino..Kelly...Tarkington....marvelous stats but Superbowl wins?.....nada....

that should be "one he barely lost"....but still 3 Superbowls....two with one team, and now this one.....

that alone is amazing.....

love Manning, but Kurt is in his THIRD Superbowl.....
