Okay, the dress is hideous.

But why can’t a woman wear a dress in the National Cathedral? Why does it have to be a suit?

All First Ladies have worn suits in this instance.

She could have put a jacket over the dress.

I think a woman can wear a dress as long as it has long sleeves. However, the First Lady should be wearing a suit. I don’t think it would be appropriate for the President to wear a sports coat either, but rather a suit and tie.

It is day time, and a suit looks very well. If a dress, a coat added would be OK. A suit can be dignified, conservative and fit the occasion. A dress is nice for evening wear.
