The Knox Mine disaster resulted from the greed of the coal companies digging too close to the underside of the Susquehanna River, resulting in a cave in that flooded a vast network of anthracite coal mines under the Wyoming Valley area of Northeast PA, effectively killing the industry.
They were so desperate to try to stop it, that they dumped railroad cars down the vortex, but to no avail. More here.
