For about the first three days home, I experienced a form of sensory overload and occasionally found myself somewhat overwhelmed at all of the abundance around me."I wish every American could experience this. We take so much for granted.
I had the exact same experience coming out of the desert. My knees literally went wobbly with the sight of it all.

What a great post and thank you for your contributions. I’ve followed you silently the last few years and there is one frivolous thing I really want to know. How do you manage without TexMex?

I smell a book deal in the making. I hope you do it, sweetie. You are one of the 3% of Americans who have been there, more than the rest can say.
I recall the dark days of Anbar ‘05-06, right along with you. Keep up the fight!

Great story Allegra ... and not a single mention of socks! ;-) Seriously though, I appreciate you taking the time to write and post your account. Fascinating stuff from a very interesting person. It is my hope that we will meet one day, and no doubt I will be all the richer afterward. Take care and keep on enjoying what you do ... that is definitely one of life’s greatest rewards.

This is EXACTLY what we need.
On-the-spot reporting by one who is THERE. If God smiles on the US, and especially Freepers, HE would give us hundreds of Allegras in places like Gaza, Bosnia, and Georgia (The one next to the recharged USSR). We would get the truth instead of someone’s agenda
Don’t what your job is there, but you are a better reporter than anything FOX news has. (I don’t watch/listen to the others)
