Tom Hanks, Executive Producer for HBO’s controversial polygamist series “Big Love,” made his feelings toward the Mormon Church’s involvement in California's Prop 8 (which prohibits gay marriage) very clear at the show’s premiere party on Wednesday night.

I’ve enjoyed several of his movies, although I can’t say that his “range” as an actor has greatly impressed me.

I also never got the impression that he was especially brilliant, or politically well-informed.

“I’ve never thought Hanks was a good actor”

I wouldn’t go as far as you in saying he’s not a good actor, but I don’t think he’s that great of an actor. It depends on the movie, I thought he did alright in Apollo 13 for example. Like you, I judge the entertainers on their merits, not their politics. I think Morgan Freeman is excellent for example, even though I’m pretty sure he is left-leaning.

The Mormons have the same political rights that any other American citizen has. The political Left doesn’t like America, but they still have the right to spew their nonsense.

I agree. I didn’t think he was that good but he had a sort of sentimental, “average middle American” quality that I liked. By making statements like this, he completely undermines the one thing I liked about him.

The opposite is true! Those that support Proposition 8 are most America. They voted for it, Which is the American way, man and woman marriages, have been most American since America was founded!
To be any other way ,is un-Americian!

MEGoody says Tom Hanks is an idiot, at least when it comes to issues of the sanctity of marriage.

I've admired Hanks because of his work to get the war memorial, et al. But this kind of silliness reminds me that even a broken clock is right twice a day.

His son must be gay. Why on earth would he support “gay marriage” if someone near or dear to him wasn’t gay? Or is Tom Hanks that shallow that he jumps on the cause de jour bandwagon?

Un-American? California had a vote. Prop 8 passed with historic voter turnout due to the Presidential election. What could be more American than that? Love your movies Tom but your opinion does not trump the will of the voting public.

I didn't realize that Hanks was executive producer for “Big Love”. I thought he had at least some integrity, but with this statement and his involvement in this tawdry show, my opinion of him has changed.

"Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice? And let us with caution indulge the supposition, that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect, that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. Exactly. The celebs run around telling how to vote, what to think and how we should act but when was the last time they got their hands dirty or had a servants heart that was not associated with a publicity stunt.....

Why don’t those of us who don’t want to have to be exposed to the “gay lifestyle” have a right to do so? Unfortunately there are places in this country where it is considered acceptable and even embraced. Why don’t the gays live there and leave those of us who find it unacceptable alone?

Tom has shown us a tiny bit of what is to come or what life would be like if the true believers could really have their way. Any dissent would be ‘unamerican’ and dealt with. His statement is a grim revelation.

How fitting that Tom Hanks’ first big role was as a female impersonator.

I would think his Greek Orthodox wife might have a different opinion.

Didn't he join the Church for their wedding?

PS Thank you for your service.

Well he clearly has no clue of the Christian heritage of this nation and its founders.

Do you?

Feature a field with a fence running down the middle and a podium at the fence. Evryone gets to stand at the podium and give their two cents. Some people like Tom Hanks get a bigger podium because of the media. After you give your opinion you go left over the fence or you go right...no middle ground anymore. What people like Hanks and the media ignore is the 56 million souls standing on the right side of the fence......
