Nephilium were a class of fallen angels—typically the daddies of the offspring.

IIRC, one camp interprets Nephilim as having been derived from the word "nephiyl" or giant...and another holds that the word Nephilim comes from the word "naphal" which means "to fall" or "to make fall."

Hence some folks differ as to whether the Nephilim are the offspring of the Fallen...or the Fallen themselves.

I tend to fall into the Giant group for the reason that (in Numbers 13:33) when Moses sent the spies to reconnoiter Canaan and they returned to report that they had seen giants (Sons of Anak), the same word was used (Nephiyl) as was used in Genesis 6:4.

That said, while it is impossible to establish a definition with absolute certainty, it sure is fun to dig into it.
