My wife's coworker recently posted a message about an MRI his six year old son recently underwent. Lucas has been having headaches for a while, and the doctor ordered an MRI to see what was going on. Rather than try to paraphrase what he said, I'm just going to quote it.
"Thank you for all the prayers. Yesterday was a very long day for us. The MRI went fine and Lucas was a champ. He's a heck of good kid.
Before I get to the results, for those of you who know Laura, please don't call her for a while. She's very upset and she does not feel like talking about this right now.
Lucas has a rather large cist in his spine, called a Syrinx that is slowly collecting cerebrospinal fluid. This is the fluid that surrounds the brain and spine in everyone. In his case the Syrinx has gotten large enough that something needs to be done soon before it could begin to cause any neurological problems so some type of surgery is needed very soon. Right now he has no neurological issues, thank goodness.
The doctors would much prefer to resolve the problem that is causing the Syrinx instead of draining the fluid because draining would require actually cutting into the spinal cord which increases the risk of neurological damage during surgery.
The doctors are 90% sure he has what is called a Chiari (kee-ah-ree) Malformation where some of the tissue from the cerebellum (back part of the brain) is taking up some of the room in the hole at the bottom of the skull where the brain stem goes down and connects with the spinal cord. Because this tissue is taking up some of that room it prevents the fluid that goes from the brain into the spinal cord from coming back up. Basically the fluid is going down but is unable to get back up. The fluid basically has no where to go so the Syrinx forms to hold the fluid.
We will have one more MRI to confirm and rule out a couple other items. Assuming the next MRI doesn't show anything else Lucas will have surgery to basically make the hole in the base of his skull a little larger to allow the fluid to flow back up. If this all works fine the Syrinx will, over time, go away.
Our surgeon has done over 400 of these surgeries so we're confident in his ability to get through this without any issues.
The doctor has asked that Lucas not play any sports or do anything rambunctious. Pray that we'll be able to calm down this bundle of 6-year old energy. This may be the most difficult part prior to surgery.
Thank you again for your prayers for Lucas and our family. Please add the surgeon to your prayers.
I'll keep you updated when I have more."
Prayers and gentle hugs.

Prayers for this little boy!
This is EXACTLY the thing on an episode I watched of Mystery Diagnosis; the name of it and the “brain pushing through the hole”.
Don’t recall exactly how it turned out - I think fine - because I watch so many of them in succession I get things mixed up.
So hoping he can pull through without a hitch!
Prayers up for a brave young man and his family.
Pinging FR Prayer Warriors!
