Tania Chernova’s Lesson for Israel

by Bill Levinson Tania Chernova (the sniper portrayed by Rachel Weisz in “Enemy at the Gates”) was actually an American who went to Russia to rescue her grandparents during the Second World War. The Nazis, however, murdered her grandparents (not her parents as depicted in the movie). As a result,

After serving with the partisans, she made her way to Stalingrad, determined to kill as many Germans as she could. Many of the savage German reprisals led her to dehumanize the enemy. She called them sticks, fit only for breaking.

It is believed that Tania Chernova broke dozens of German “sticks” during her career. Not all Germans were Nazis; most were men who wore the wrong color uniform out of loyalty to Germany (as opposed to Hitler), or because they were drafted by Hitler. What, then, are we to say of Hamas terrorists who do not bother to wear any uniforms whatsoever while they, like the Nazis, orchestrate the murder of Jewish civilians? Our position is that they should be treated as “sticks, fit only for breaking.”

While gratifying in the short term, killing members of Hamas is just another effort by Israel to maintain the status quo.

And until Israel realizes that there will not be peace for even a minute until the status quo has changed, its actions are fruitless.

To begin, the simple question of "What do the Palestinians want?", has a simple answer, but one Israel and Israelis cannot accept. The Palestinians want *all* the land of Israel. All of it. Not a square inch less. And they will accept nothing less.

This is very important for Jews and Israelis to understand. Because they are endlessly willing to give the Palestinians everything that is good in the world. But they *refuse* to believe that nothing, not a thing, matters to the Palestinians but land. They just do not listen to the Palestinians when they speak, and say the same thing, over and over again.

Because what this means is that the status quo will continue until land is at stake. But not Israeli land. Palestinian land. Because as avaricious the Palestinians are for more land, they are even *more* clutching and obsessive about the land they already have.

So the situation is clear. Israeli cannot ever cede land to Palestinians, but they have a potent tool to force Palestinians to stop with the violence. To progressively take Palestinian land.

Take some land. Ignore their painfully impassioned cries and threats to return it. Then make them the "take it or leave it" offer. "Stop with the violence, or Israel will take *more* Palestinian land."

The real hard part will be in refusing the entreaties of the international community, that do not understand that empty and dead desert is the heart and soul of the conflict. To them it is a nothing. So why shouldn't Israel give it back? Because to do so would cause war.

It is an article of faith with Muslims to gain more land. To do so is the best possible thing to happen to a Muslim, and to lose land is the worst possible thing that can happen to them. For if they lose land, they are a shame before their family and their bloody god.

So the way to deal with them is straightforward. "Land for peace". Unless Palestinians give Israel peace, their land will be taken from them for good.

And one way or another, there *will* be peace. To hell with the status quo.
